THREE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST PROMISING YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS JOIN FORCES TO BRING YOU A TRIPLE BILL OF BRAND NEW PLAYS
With the assistance of a generous grant from the Seaborn Broughton & Walford Foundation, and following individual successes in their home cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, Ang Collins (Blueberry Play), Fiona Spitzkowsky (Unicorn D*ck) and Lewis Treston (Reagan Kelly), three of Australia’s leading young playwrights, have come together to create a new work for Meat Market Stables. These exciting young playwrights have collaborated on a triple bill of short plays, each of which confronts the anxieties, frustrations and insecurities of the “millennial” generation. From overspending on superfluous homeware, inflating one’s appearance on social media, and existential concerns about the future of the planet, DISPARATE SCENES FOR MILLENNIAL DREAMS aims to punch the zeitgeist squarely in the jaw. Directed by Benjamin Sheen (A Little Bit Of Pain Never Hurt Anyone), produced and with dramaturgy by Thomas De Angelis (Chamber Pot Opera) and presented by Periscope Productions (Fireplace), DISPARATE SCENES FOR MILLENNIAL DREAMS introduces these fresh young playwrights to Melbourne audiences.
The idea for the show came from Sheen’s desire to combine the creative minds of the three playwrights: “I’d always been interested in short plays, possibly because of my short attention span! So, we were keen to create something that dropped the audience into a world really quickly, and despite having little or no contact with each other, the writers came up with astoundingly interrelated plays. All three of the pieces explore the petty foibles of our generation, the loss of agency that we’re feeling at the moment, and the sense of emptiness that comes from living amongst a late-capitalist, hypocritical and self-obsessed milieu. Sounds intense, but there’s plenty of humour there too.” Playwright Ang Collins, in her piece Huge Indoor Plant Warehouse Sale has turned her trademark wit towards a new-fangled millennial obsession: indoor plants. “All of the anxieties, frustrations and insecurities of today’s twentysomethings are being poured into the maintenance of indoor ferns and monsteras,” Collins says. “Rather than settling down and saving for our first home, we’re doting on fiddle leafs and it seems as though we’re purposefully diverting our own attention away from more important things.”
Playwright Lewis Treston has written the not-quite-love story of two cosplay enthusiasts who meet by chance in Osaka, Japan. The piece Condo Osaka devastatingly unpicks the sordid hypocrisies of our time: “I tried to tell the story of the loneliest Spiderman and nastiest Sailor Moon you’ve ever met. The whole thing is basically a dance between two men who aren’t at all forthcoming about who they really are and what they’re really up to.” Playwright Fiona Spitzkowsky’s piece Dawn Chorus in A Minor weaves around the other two plays, as two young people wait for salvation in a warehouse-turned-gallery. They huddle in the air-conditioning, sheltering from the now oppressive heat wrought by human induced climate change. Spitzkowsky says “For me, this was an opportunity to explore how the power structures that currently define our personal and political relationships might survive and thrive in the coming climate catastrophe. What are we willing to conserve in the name of self-preservation?”
Opening on Friday 31 May, at Meat Market Stables, DISPARATE SCENES FOR MILLENNIAL DREAMS is set to delight, surprise and engage young audiences – and perhaps infuriate older ones – and is a brilliant collaboration between some of Australian theatre’s most important movers and shakers.

What Would Love Do

Dirty Rascal are about to release their new single 'What Would Love Do' on May 24 and head out on tour from May 11.
today Susie O'Day-Cashmere reviews the new single:
DIRTY RASCAL
“WHAT WOULD LOVE DO”
I love Dirty Rascal, I love everything about them. Just putting it out there!! The second single from their album “You be the king”, “What would love do” is an absolutely brilliant reggae inspired track, that I found myself putting on repeat.
Andrew McSweeney’s vocals are smooth and filled with such raw emotion, making it easy to absorb yourself into thought provoking lyrics. The rhythm section led by Jerry Spieser and Andy Dixon is incredibly powerful. It’s a mixture of reggae, soft rock and funk all rolled into the unique sound of Dirty Rascal.
The vocal harmonies are on pointe and the lyrics have a powerful social message relevant to each and all. I’m certain anyone who listens to this song will love it and solidify their views on just what a fabulous tight band Dirty Rascal are.
I can not wait to see them live when they come to Melbourne!!!
Susie Cashmere
Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine expresses its special thanks to the musicians, Catalyst PR and personally Catherine Swinton for the opportunity to review the new single as well as Susie for her insight.

It’s an Aussie institution, and Colonial are bringing it to GABS with their Backyard BBQ. Pull up a milk crate under the Hills Hoist and kick back with a cold one and a freshly sizzled snag. If the scent of sausage doesn’t pull you in, the esky full of ice cold beers sure will.

Dirty Rascal

Dirty Rascal are about to release their new single 'What Would Love Do' on May 24 and head out on tour from May 11.
WHAT WOULD LOVE DO - SINGLE RELEASE & TOUR
Dirty Rascal head out on their ‘What Would Love Do’ Tour in in May/June 2019. To coincide with the tour they release the radio edit of ‘What Would Love Do’ on Friday May 24 which will be the second single from their album, ‘You Be The King’. This reggae inspired track, rich with tasty guitar (care of the late, great Ross Hannaford) and vintage keys. They have a brilliant new music video to accompany the track as well. Andrew McSweeney’s emotive vocal sits easily over with the driving rhythm of Jerry Speiser. Written by Andrew and Jerry, Andrew had this to say about the meaning behind the track:
“‘What Would Love Do’ is about looking for an answer during challenging times and realising it might just be love. Yep pretty corny” says Andrew. “Beginning with stillness, silence, refection we allow the space for connection and for answers to present themselves. Disconnect to reconnect.”
‘You Be The King’ was released last year to critical acclaim and coincided with a series of shows, inspiring some great reviews. The strong energy within the group has inspired new audiences who eagerly await the new release.
Dirty Rascal shows have been described as:
“Life-affirming… this is songwriting to stir the soul.” - The Music
Dirty Rascal’s powerhouse rhythm section featuring Grammy award winner Jerry Speiser (Men at Work) and Andy Dixon (The Cloaks), with guitars and mandolin from songwriters Andrew McSweeney (McSweeney/Kutcha Edwards) and ARIA winner John Fleming (Scared Weird Little Guys), are capped off with lush vocal harmonies, all in the natural tuning of A432. There is a deep acknowledgement of the power of the feminine and masculine in songs which stretch from sweet country rock through soaring double guitar solos into reggae and funk.
Dirty Rascal’s new single ‘What Would Love Do’ will be available on all digital platforms from May 24

Transmission Films present a new historical drama called Peterloo
in cinemas May 16
An epic portrayal of the events surrounding the infamous 1819 Peterloo Massacre, where a peaceful pro-democracy rally at St Peter's Field in Manchester turned into one of the bloodiest and most notorious episodes in British history. The massacre saw British government forces charge into a crowd of over 60,000 that had gathered to demand political reform and protest against rising levels of poverty. Many protesters were killed and hundreds more injured, sparking a nationwide outcry but also further government suppression. The Peterloo Massacre was a defining moment in British democracy which also played a significant role in the founding of The Guardian newspaper.
please stay tuned for Marina Skliar's review coming up soon and for more details.
