The other concerts include
CASTLEMAINE - Saturday 7 April
MACEDON - Sunday 8 April
Among the most popular works for choir, The Requiem is rarely heard accompanied by instruments. In a performance treat, the vocal beauty of the Australian Chamber Choir will be accompanied by members of the Melbourne Baroque Orchestra for a series of concerts which will ring out across Castlemaine, Macedon and Melbourne during April. The work is scored for two basset horns, which were Mozart’s favourite instrument and will be played by guest musicians Craig Hill ( Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) and Nicole Van Bruggen ( @AustralianClassicalAndRomanticOrchestra), along with strings, two bassoons, two trumpets, three trombones, timpani played by specialist musicians from the Melbourne Baroque Orchestra.
The Requiem was written during the final weeks of the composer’s life for a patron who wished to remain anonymous. This unfinished work is shrouded in mystery. Adding to the delight of the Mozart Requiem program is a rarely performed work, Palestrina’s ethereal Stabat Mater, which will be sung alongside The Requiem in the one-hour concert.
The second concert of the ACC’s 2018 season, True Romantics, features a broad range of inspiring and uplifting choral music including works by Elgar, Brahms, Monteverdi, Barber and Ravel. The concert will tour Middle Park, Geelong and Macedon in June and August, with a debut performance at the Art Gallery of NSW in September. The Choir ends the year on a joyful note with A Baroque Christmas in Sydney, Brighton, Middle Park, Macedon and Geelong. In European countries across the centuries, Christmas has been marked by vibrant and joyous music-making. In this program, Douglas Lawrence presents his selection of the most entertaining Christmas music from the late 1500s to the late 1700s, with music by Bach (In dulci jubilo, Singet dem Herren, O Jesulein süss), Byrd, Handl, Palestrina, Praetorius, Marenzio, Schütz and Scheidt.
