A NEW AUSTRALIAN SONG CYCLE
Presented by A. J. Ridefelt in association with The MC Showroom Hatchery Sponsorship Program
TWELVE STORIES. SIX TRAVELERS. ONE JOURNEY.
SONGS of the NORTHERN RIVER is an enchanting collection of short stories that explore how people navigate change. This new Australian song cycle promises unforgettable performances from its all-female cast. The songs flow together to reflect an absurd, tragic and heartfelt picture of human resilience. A lost traveler rows down the Northern River at night, glimpsing yellow wisps of light in the distance. As she draws nearer, they whisper stories of past travelers, and those yet to come.
A. J. Ridefelt presents Songs Of The Norther River, a 60 minute anthology of twelve original songs. The Melbourne-based writer is known for his witty and thought-provoking
work, making his debut earlier this year with a sell-out season of Post A New Musical. His latest work features a cast of six, directed by Jess D’Souza, with musical direction by Rachel Lewindon and choreography by Matthew Dear. Songs of the Northern River is the recipient of the The MC Showroom, 2019 Hatchery Program, an initiative supporting new Australian theatre. The MC Showroom, together with its partner business Paxus Productions, have provided a professional creative process and treatment of the production through mentorship, music and sound production, recording
and use of their theatre facilities. The result is an exceptional collaboration intent upon pushing boundaries in Melbourne’s
independent music theatre scene.
Songs of the Northern River premieres on the 19th of November for a strictly limited season of seven shows.
“Songs of the Northern River takes you on a thrilling adventure and it’s been an immensely rewarding process to see it come to life.” - A. J. Ridefelt, Writer & Producer
“I’ve worked on a lot of shows over the years, and this is world class. The purpose of the MC Hatchery program is to find and develop exceptional works being written locally, and provide additional support to bring them to a wider audience. Songs Of The Northern River is exactly that kind of production. Alex's creation exemplifies the caliber, quality and standard of material being written in our local industry.” - Craig Bryant, Paxus Productions
“It is such a treat to see six wonderful women bring this delicious score to life! The show will leave you feeling uplifted and excited about the future of music theatre in Australia!” -
