Exploring the narrative embedded in Bach's cello suites, Cook & Co continues to break the mould. In addition to the glorious music, ranging from the much loved Prelude in G to the jubilant Gigue in D, a series of dramatic vignettes provides glimpses into the life of an aspiring musician, Dulcie. We meet Dulcie as she returns from study in Europe, moves into a bedsit above an inner-Melbourne shop and endeavours to establish a career as a professional musician. Starring cellist, Josephine Vains and actor, Leah Filley, and bought to us by the creative vision of acclaimed pianist and artistic director, Janis Cook, Suite Life promises to be another success on the Melbourne arts scene.
The Artists: Josephine Vains, one of Australia’s most engaging and sought-after cellists, has performed on concert stages throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Caribbean. Currently performing with Firebird Trio, Accademia Arcadias, Australian Octet and Kammermusik, she also teaches at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, the Monash University Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music, and the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. Actor, Leah Filley, grew up in Melbourne and has recently returned from studying at the Actors Studio in New York.
She was part of a year long tour with the National Players in the USA playing Lady Macbeth as well as performing in Comedy of Errors, The Odyssey, The Tempest and a feature film of King Lear. She performed and co-wrote a short film adaptation of Julius Caesar, ‘We are ROM3’, which has been selected for several short film festivals internationally. Creative and Artistic Director, Janis Cook, enjoyed a long association with the MSO as principal pianist, following years touring as a repetiteur for the Australian Ballet Company. In addition to performing and teaching engagements, she established Cook & Co in 2008 to foster collaborative music performances and once again brings a unique chamber music fusion piece for Melbourne audiences.
The performance will be followed by complimentary refreshments in the precinct Gallery. Transport: tram route 75 or 78 / free street parking from 5pm. Tickets are on sale now at: https://www.trybooking.com/book/event?eid=281899 *Early bird and series discounts are available.
