“ #YouBeTheKing ”
release date: 3 August
Susie O'Day-Cashmere reviews the new album:
Listening to the debut album from this brilliant band made me not only feel good, but wanting to sing along. Good, old fashioned music. No tricks, loops or auto tune, just raw talent with fabulous melodies and lyrics to match. This stellar line up, all hailing from Melbourne, include Andrew McSweeney, (Midnight Hunting Crew), John Fleming, (Scared Weird Little Guys) Jerry Speiser, (Men at Work) and Andy Dixon (New Geisha)
The first song “Be a Lion” had me hooked. It will also be released on August the 3rd and will go straight to radio.
The track was written by Simon McSweeney and is a humble, selfless song demonstrating his love for his sons . Fabulous. Dirty Rascal formed in 2017, the brainchild of Andrew McSweeney who wrote most of the album, with the exception of “Rolling thunder”,(Peter McGeehan), “What would love do”, (co written with Jerry Speiser) and “Be a lion”, (Simon McSweeney).
When I heard “What Would Love Do”, I replayed it a few times, singing along, leading me to think this surely will be the second single released from this fine album. Dirty Rascal are a tight, sophisticated, no nonsense band full of exceptional talent.
The band members want to represent positive messages, reflected in their music, and the connection they have with their audience demonstrates this. I would possibly categorise this music as “country rock”, meets “folk” and “blues”. Double guitars, brilliant vocal harmonies, and musical hooks, makes for great songs.
I’ll definitely keep an eye on this band and will be surprised if the Australian public fail to connect well with this album. Dirty Rascal are touring at present and you would not be disappointed to catch one of their gigs.
