Motorkite Dreaming is the ultimate adventure story. It follows two friends – Aidan and Daryl – and their fearless fiancés – Lexi and Elsie – on a 4,000km journey, across 5 deserts, flying from Adelaide to Broome across Australia on micro light planes, otherwise known as ‘motorbikes with wings’. These ‘planes’ are just big fabric kites with a lawnmower engine, part blowfly, part tricycle. They are designed for a flight around the park, not across a continent. Their dream is to pull off a daring feat no one has attempted before. Flying from south to north across 4 deserts, the intrepid couples must navigate extreme conditions, crocodile-infested swamps, and their own fears.
Festooned with cameras, the microlights glide across Australia in a delicate dance between earth and sky. They capture a huge landscape most of us don’t know, like the green miracle of Dalhousie Springs in the salty desert, Windjana Gorge which once rang with gunfire, and the abandoned town of Jagga Jagga, alive with nothing but the ghost of a dead child.
Throughout their daring exploits, our adventurers lives are touched by the Aboriginal Australians they meet, who share their culture both ancient and new; from football in the desert, to song lines, and stomping rock and roll under the stars. In a touching moment we see Aidan take an Aboriginal elder up in his motorkite to see his world from above for the first time.
The adventurers are guided by Carroll Karpany, a founding member of seminal ‘80s Aboriginal reggae-rock band ‘Us Mob’, and his audio-mixer Bart Sansbury. Karpany, who starred in the groundbreaking 1981 documentary Wrong Side of the Road, has written original songs for the Motorkite Dreaming soundtrack along with composer David Bridie.
Director Charlie Hill Smith describes the film as “In many ways a Trojan horse narrative; a story that smells like an adventure, but which takes audiences deep into the beautiful bush of Aboriginal Australia, opening their eyes to a culture of mind-boggling complexity and beauty.”
