MORE than 80 stunning quilts, coverlets and patchwork fashion garments feature in the NGV’s Making the Australian Quilt: 1800-1950 exhibition.
Australia’s rich quilting heritage, featuring images of native flora and fauna, early coats of arms and motifs of daily colonial life will be on display.
Showcasing important works from public and private collections across the country, the exhibition provides an insight into the skills and technical virtuosity of the women and men whose works chronicle the history of Australia stitch by stitch.
An astonishing array of materials tells of the resourcefulness of their makers – from taffeta, velvet, furnishing fabric and dressmaking scraps to flour bags, possum skins and flannelette, each transformed by the act of cutting, layering, piecing and stitching.
Making the Australian Quilt: 1800-1950 is on at the NGV’s Ian Potter Centre (Federation Square) until November 6, 2016 http://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/…/making-the-australian-quilt-18…/
