"When I was given this book to read, I assumed it would be some kind of endangered wild life species. How wrong I was!!
It’s a book that begins at the Melbourne Zoo, drinking champagne, until an animals death at the zoo throws the milliner/part time sleuth into another mystery, something of which Catherine Kint thrives on. Catherine and her trusted best friend, Boris, fellow part time sleuth insert themselves in the case and annoy everyone from zoologists to the police.
Accidents happen, rivalries and egos clash, reputations will be tarnished and by the end of the novel, one of the characters will be fed to an extremely ravenous carnivore! Pachyderm s the second crime solving adventure for our heroine Catherine Kint and her crime solving partner Boris. The first book in the series is called JINX, which I highly recommend for a great read as well.
The scene is set in the inner suburbs of Melbourne, littered with trendy coffee shops, pubs and bars. Kint is a kind of accidental detective who has the knack of turning any adventure out of the ordinary into a mysterious crime adventure. So a social occasion at the zoo, starts with a romantic encounter with a zoo keeper but soon ends with the sad and tragic sudden death of a female Asian elephant, Dang Zei.
Despite Kint’s conviction that the elephants death is connected to to the mauling of a zoo keeper called Hacksa, who Kint had a slight romantic interest with, the Zoo officials and Police refuse to listen to her. McGinlay throws some great tongue in cheek humour into this story as she did with the first novel JINX.
It’s fast paced and high drama from the onset. Simply put, it’s fabulous!
Kint stomps mercilessly into anyone’s life she can get answers from and you get the feeling that if you met her, you just might want to strangle her!! There is a lot of character development, contemplation, drinking and some poignant moments both in terms of love lost and gained. Added of course to the fabulous mystery solving.
It’s a quirky read and thoroughly entertaining. JINX and PACHYDERM are the first 2 in the Catherine Kirt detective series and I for one am hoping and looking for some more!
I give it $8 out of $10 on the “Cashy Scale”
