Welcome to the 12th Russian Resurrection Film Festival . We thought that last year would be difficult, but it proved to be our best year with audience attendance up across all Australian cities and the reconnaissance venture into New Zealand a resounding success. It is remarkable that even during times of economic turbulence, Russian cinema continues to thrive and produce challenging, complex and sophisticated stories. It provides audiences with a surprising diversity of voices and ideas that are present in Russian society today but invisible in mainstream perceptions.
In October and November the largest festival of Russian Cinema anywhere in the world (outside of Russia) returns to screens in New Zealand and Australia-wide. In 2015 we showcase 18 wonderful new films. As always we feature the best of the Russian box office (the monumental historical epic that places women at the front and centre of the frontline with Battalion; the remarkable geological adventure Territory and the much-loved New Year’s Eve comedy omnibus, Yolki 1914). There are romantic comedies, powerful dramas, psychological thrillers, arthouse gems, family friendly fare and a few high quality children’s animated tales.
We celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Victory Day. Russia produces some of the best war films anywhere in the world, but these are not bloody action flicks. Russian war films are about deep human emotion in the face of enormous tragedy and the hope that allows survival in the harshest of times. The program features a combination of new films and classics devoted to the great patriotic war.
Thank you to all our sponsors for your continued support of this unique and memorable event. In particular we acknowledge the ongoing support of the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Russkiy Mir Foundation. Thanks also to Event Cinemas and Aami for putting Russian cinematic gems onto the big screen.
Every new film will be an Australian premiere so whether you’re looking to immerse yourself in Russian culture, undertake a historical journey or succumb to an entertaining romance or something to take the kids to - this year’s program will satisfy everyone.
