The Yak Ales Melbourne Barbecue Festival returns to Flemington Racecourse in 2017 over two massive days filled with mouth watering barbecue from local and international pitmasters, barbecue cooking and butchery demos, a barbecue cook- off sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, bands and more.
This year, Memphis Barbecue Company and Ubon's Barbeque of Yazoo, two of America’s favourite barbecue restaurants, join the Yak Ales Melbourne Barbecue Festival line-up among some of Melbourne’s best local barbecue joints. Both restaurants are regulars at the annual Big Apple Block Party where over 200,000 New Yorkers feast on barbecue over a weekend in June.
Memphis Barbecue Co. will be serving their world-championship whole hog and pork ribs under the masterful direction of three-time world champion John David Wheeler, and Ubons Barbeque will be led by Leslie Roark-Scott (aka the “Barbeque Princess”). Roark-Scott is a third-generation pitmaster of the Roark Mississippi barbeque family.
Flying the flag for Texas-style barbeque is Kevin Bludso who is coming from the USA for the event. The Texas-born and Compton-raised pitmaster and owner of Bludso’s BBQ in Compton, will be leading the San Antone Melbourne crew with their brand new trailer pit at the event.
Other local favourites include: Fancy Hank's (led by Mike Patrick), Bluebonnet Barbecue (led by Chris Terlikar), Burn City Smokers (led by Raphael Guthrie and Steve Kimonides), Dexter (led by Tom Peasnell), Southside Smokers (led by Jan Wristen), Smokin Barrys (led by Jim White) and more.
To set the mood for two-days of barbecue and beers, the team have put together an awesome line-up of local artists including: Paris Wells, The Glorious North, The New Savages, Werewolves of Melbourne, Johnny Wonderpants, Sam Sam But Different and acoustic legend Sunny Hawkings Music.
