YOUNG ROMANTICS - 8.00pm, Saturday 21 May 2016
Hawthorn Arts Centre, 360 Burwood Road, Hawthorn
PROGRAM
Felix Mendelssohn - Hebrides Overture
Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto
Beethoven - Symphony No. 7
Romanticism and its focus on the individual artist as a creative hero emerges through the almost blinding brilliance contained in the Symphonies of Beethoven. Each one is a pearl and a world unto itself. These works foreshadow the words of Mahler speaking a century later to Sibelius saying that a symphony should contain the whole world!
Into the very large shoes of Beethoven stepped many others of creative genius during the flowering of the Romantic Period. This concert features the genius of Mendelssohn with his dark and beautiful Hebrides concert overture and his E minor violin concerto, one of the most popular violin concertos of all time. Joseph Joachim, the great violinist and pupil of Mendelssohn, when speaking of the four great German Violin Concertos (Beethoven, Brahms, Max Bruch and Mendelssohn) said that “… but the dearest of them all, the heart’s jewel, is the Mendelssohn.” Kathryn Taylor will be our fine soloist in the Mendelssohn. http://zelmansymphony.org.au/Performers/KathrynTaylor
Beethoven wrote that his Symphony No.7 is one of his greatest works.Richard Wagner, composer called it the "apotheosis of the dance”, that its swift and unexpected changes and contrasts excite the imagination. We hope you will enjoy it as much as we will enjoy playing it for you.
Mark Shiell will present a pre-concert talk in the auditorium commencing 7.30pm.
