Sharmill Films invite you to watch a new opera Met Opera: The Hours
in cinemas January 28
Soprano Renée Fleming makes her highly anticipated return to the Met in the world-premiere production of Pulitzer Prize–winning composer Kevin Puts’s The Hours, adapted from Michael Cunningham’s acclaimed novel. Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway and made a household name by the Oscar-winning 2002 film version starring Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore, and Nicole Kidman, the powerful story follows three women from different eras who each grapple with their inner demons and their roles in society. The exciting premiere radiates with star power, with soprano Kelli O’Hara and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato joining Fleming as the opera’s trio of heroines. Phelim McDermott directs this compelling drama, with Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to conduct Puts’s poignant and powerful score.

Madman Films invite you to watch a new documentary YOU CAN GO NOW
in cinemas January 26
YOU CAN GO NOW looks at the life and provocative work and writings of First Nations artist, Richard Bell. It reveals the ‘two Richards’ – ‘Richie’ the provocateur and enfante terrible of the art world who challenges its whiteness and the Richard who spent his childhood living in a tin shed, learnt his politics on the streets of Redfern and is known in his own community as an activist. His polemics and creative outputs provide a lens through which to consider the last 50 years of First Nations activism in Australia and its links to global protest movements.

Madman Films invite you to watch a new drama called EMILY
in cinemas January 12
EMILY tells the imagined life of one of the world’s most famous authors, Emily Brontë. The film stars Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Death on the Nile) as Emily, a rebel and misfit, as she finds her voice and writes the literary classic ‘Wuthering Heights’. EMILY explores the relationships that inspired her – her raw, passionate sisterhood with Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling – The Musketeers) and Anne (Amelia Gething – The Spanish Princess); her first aching, forbidden love for Weightman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen – The Lost Daughter, The Haunting of Bly Manor) and her care for her maverick brother Branwell (Fionn Whitehead – The Duke, Dunkirk), whom she idolises. Frances O’Connor makes her directorial debut with EMILY, from her own original screenplay. The film also stars Adrian Dunbar (Line of Duty) and Gemma Jones (Bridget Jones’s Baby, Gentleman Jack).

In LONDON BY NIGHT, Nikki Nouveau and her band pay tribute to one of America’s most beloved jazz vocalists, #JulieLondon. London’s sultry, smouldering voice best known for ‘Cry Me A River’, the torch song that launched her career, is heard on over 30 albums released during the 1950s and 1960s. For 40 years, London enigmatically popularised great American jazz standards such as ‘Fly Me To The Moon’, ‘My Heart Belongs To Daddy’ and ‘Misty’ and she remains a significant source of inspiration for contemporary artists, including Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish.
Nouveau’s show not only reimagines London’s wonderful music, but also shares intimate stories behind some of her most celebrated songs. The highschool journey has finally come to an end. Graduating was definitely one of the best feelings to look for in high school and without a doubt mine was definitely a blast. I will forever be grateful for all the memories I’ve made along the way and I am so happy that I was able to end it off with my final highschool formal. I was very sceptic about having a photo shoot but after seeing the photos I’m so glad I made this decision. It was such a fun experience and I would definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone, the photos are amazing and I will definitely use them further into my life. The whole photoshoot experience was very fun and it was something out of my comfort zone but I am willing to do it again. This was a beautiful way to end off my schooling experience and create memories I’ll be able to cherish forever.

SINGING SWANS
Project by Nav
Reflection
sitting with my reflection, reminiscing about the days of the past
i sometimes wonder, what I miss the most
the connections, the places, the tastes, the smells that last
or is the no sense of time, when I was immersed
lost in pursuit of something, a thing that’d be so fulfilling
when it finally arrived, the triumph, the elation
that didn’t last long, not as an unceasing feeling
now I miss what I had, when on the spoor
but I look for, and find the next great big thing
knowing that too won’t mollify, but it stops me craving.

There is one message that I believe has made me as strong as I am today and that is “no dream is too big or too extravagant, don't just reach for the stars, reach beyond”. With this mindset I have competed in Top Model Australia reaching the National Finals and I am now awaiting to be apart of Miss Tourism Australia National Finals. I believe everyone's hopes and dreams can become reality, no matter how hard it may seem.

A Nameless Grace

feeling very happy that we can finally release the projects that were waiting in line for so long to be published (MARQUIS ART BOOK iss 44):
Complex and Intense Beauty is Almost Beyond Language: A Nameless Grace
The Grace of Yao Mountain
Model - Grace Liu
Photographer - Gerardo Chierchia
Concept and poems - David Black
Location - Heavenly Queen Temple Footscray
Pic 1
I came from the mysterious mountain of Yao,
To the shores of Australia where I live now,
My name is Grace Liu, I have a story to tell,
Of how Melbourne became the place I now dwell.
Pic 2
I'll sing you a song of China Old,
Of Liannan Yao of scenic Guangdong,
And King Pan Temple so beautiful and strong,
The mysteries of Tao and my mother tongue.
Pic 3
Atop of the world sits my home of Yao Mountain,
We call it Yaoshan, but some call it heaven,
They tell me my birth was particularly auspicious
I was in the Quan Yin position, just like the goddess.
Pic 4
I pray to Quan Yin,
Goddess of compassion,
For she is my guide,
When there's spiritual famine
Pic 5
A pillar of strength entwined by a white dragon,
I am resilient and strong and full of passion,
I stand at the door of the heavenly temple,
I leave the material world outside as I enter the bastion.
Pic 6
You see my smile for I offer it freely,
But you don't know me yet for I am a mystery,
My clothing is Yao for these are my people,
But I stand in Australia for that's now my country.
Pic 7
I travel this path, a spiritual quest
From the East to the South and the culture of the West,
From Millenium Yao Village, I left my old place,
To live in fair Melbourne for this is my fate.
Pic 8
I was forged in the fires of the ancient Orient,
But like a phoenix reborn, I am now an Australian!
