CAROLYN ESKDALE: MEMORY HORIZON

8/2/2020

Heide Museum of Modern Art and ARTICULATE PR cordially invite you to experience a new opening exhibition called
CAROLYN ESKDALE: MEMORY HORIZON
DATES: 15 February – 14 June 2020
LOCATION: Heide Museum of Modern Art at 7 Templestowe Road, Bulleen, VIC 3105
WEBSITE: https://chapeloffchapel.com.au/
Heide Museum of Modern Art presents a thought-provoking exhibition responding to the award-winning architectural space of Heide Modern , Melbourne, Australia: Heide Museum of Modern Art presents Memory Horizon, an exhibition of new work by Australian artist Carolyn Eskdale, from 15 February to 14 June 2020. Featuring a series of room-scale site-specific sculptures, the exhibition responds to the unique modernist architecture of Heide Modern and animates the former residence as its own cast object.
Carolyn Eskdale's installations in domestic and public spaces trace the way we physically and psychically inhabit the world, creating a dialogue between the body’s sense and the mind’s view. For Memory Horizon she worked in Heide Modern in solitude for several months making ephemeral structures from cardboard in each of the rooms and developing a sculptural language of motifs and forms specific to the building’s character and history. The exhibition presents photographs of these temporary in-situ works in conversation with new sculptures and insertions that activate or obscure access to the spaces within the building, altering visitors’ experiences of them. In layering past procedures and present conditions, Eskdale explores the interstices between private and public life and the overlap between the studio and the gallery. Heide Artistic Director Lesley Harding said, “The award-winning Heide Modern was conceived by the museum’s founders John and Sunday Reed as ‘a gallery to be lived in’. This new exhibition by Carolyn Eskdale delves into the Reeds’ original motives and ambitions for the building, reflecting on its history and suggesting new and poetic possibilities for its future.”
The exhibition is accompanied by an artist talk. Join artist Carolyn Eskdale and Heide’s Artistic Director Lesley Harding in conversation as they explore the history of the award-winning Heide Modern building as both a domestic and public space, and how Eskdale ‘inhabited’ the house over the course of a year to develop her new site-responsive installation.
Admission fees apply: Members free |Adult $20 |Concession $15 |Children (16 and under) free; heide.com.au

ABOUT HEIDE
Set on sixteen acres of parkland with Yarra River frontage, Heide Museum of Modern Art, or Heide as it is affectionately known, is one of Australia’s most important cultural institutions. Once a significant Wurundjeri gathering place, the property was later a dairy farm before becoming known as a hub for Australian modernist art and writing after it was purchased by art patrons John and Sunday Reed in 1934. The Reeds opened their home to the most progressive artists of their era, including Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, John Perceval, Charles Blackman and Danila Vassilieff. Nolan’s famous Ned Kelly series (1946–47) was painted in the dining room of the Heide farmhouse.
Continuing this spirited legacy, today Heide works to inspire creative talent, collaborating with emerging and mid-career artists as well as celebrating those who have made major contributions to Australian and international art. heide.com.au
All thanks to our friends at #Heide Museum Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine is proudly covering the the exhibition and runs an interview with Carolyn (media: Andrew J Liu) Please stay tuned for more details.

 · My second stop is in building 2 of Heide and it looks so marvelous... Love the space and how it is organised... I would stay and live there but I could not find the kitchen my fav place of the house no matter how good I searched... NO KITCHEN... so I am staying where I am now.. but Heide is forever mine... The next exhibition is
EN ROUTE WONA BAE AND CHARLIE LAWLER
(I personally think the Heide Museun hires only models, so good all the women who work there look... I am stunned! Add to this they are all highly intelligent and artistic themselves.... they reminded me of the girls that work at the Moscow Tchaikovski Conservatorium : they all sound like best symphony in the world but very silent, not Tchaikovski ones... yes, they all looked like my solfeggio teacher G T Semenko... but let's talk about the art... . this exhibition is the gift to all of us loving highly creative compositions from not ordinary materials. I have no idea how long did it take to source the medium, to put it all together and then to erect it at the museum halls. More to that: they are spaced so gorgeously as they were always there, part of the the room corner, hanging from the ceiling, sneaking out of the next room inviting us to the next space just to surprise again and again with the variety and inventive mind of those authors. who think outside the usual frame..
I walked the exhibition twice and suddenly saw the lizard outside the window. He was baking in the sun close to his hiding place. He loved Heide too I guess... I asked if he is part of the exhibition and the girl who accompanied me kindly through all the rooms starting from the very first exhibition laughed. She said: no... But I replied: now he is... :)
My trip wanted to be ended traditionally with the garden patches visit that look more and more clean and more and more looked after as the weeks pass by ... new colors keep appearing as well as new edible plants and herbs do. I thought : the flowers never know if they might have a second life: as some one else's art or photography...
I also thought to show our September issue magazines devoted to animals, plants, birds and flowers... It all ended up in the nature... well and rum and raising ice cream - yet again green tea.
THANK YOU HEIDE MUSEUM for having me here... I wait for Erkin's photos to put this all into one gorgeous page about the museum I fell in love with... thank you again Tony Collins!
Last note: I showed the lizard to the dogs... Dasha ran away from me yesterday and today again just to come back and see him again... She liked him too... We could not find him today. Probably the lizards happen only once with you!

· When Tony Collins said I practically started living in Heide Museum so comfortable I feel there on their grounds as if it was so mine: the place, the forest around the modern look architecture and the art art art, he was 100 right... I walked today there again and while lying on the ground watching the skies passing by I thought: I am coming here on Tuesday when there is less people than on weekends and I set up a smallest tent here and get my computer in and the dogs out on the leashes to bark at squirrels... oh sorry again.. those different ones, that look like squirrels that Australians do not like at all as they surround the trees with plastic making poor animals lose their inhabitants : THEY WERE HERE FIRST in Melbourne, before us, people! The ones who came late should shut the doors, not get rid of possums!
Anyway... making my short story long again... Heide Museum I like only because of it its service at the cafe... no.. .lies again.. only because of their run and raisins ice cream- we are getting to the truth very fast, Natasha... faster this time..
My first exhibition to visit there is Heide Museum: TERMINUS JESS JOHNSON AND SIMON WARD
I walk in... I do not know what to expect... the floors and walls, are covered with strangely looking art: more like fractals, there are fashion mannequins, there are tapestry art pieces, images again framed, unframed... what is this? One of the girls at the museum exhibition halls approaches me and gently asks: do you know what it is? it is a virtual art... would you like me to offer you the 3D computer glasses and you should seat down please miss as your experience will be very dizzy. I submit... I did not want to see it but I will try...
She gently places the goggles on my eyes and the film starts... wait... where am I? Is it all happening here, around me or is it inside my head? I am surrounded by endless labyrinth s pouring one into another, pink deer, men performing gym tricks, walls turn into ceilings and floors into walls, my head is spinning, the images change one after another and I keep walking where the .artist vision takes me... I am mezmirised... It takes 5 min for the film to finish.. I get addicted and move to another "goggle" stand .. i think I know how to put the glasses and the head piece on. Only to see what is next?
One more labyrinth... It is a sun rise.. It is a gorgeous palace , I am inside of it... The fire bowls are burning... People walking. I fall somewhere... or where was it?.. .It finishes already... but I want more... I feel my computer game will never finish and these topological wonders with everlasting lollipops, tarantulas, crabs, blue and while colored worms, women's legs, falling down pineapples, raising from no where building columns and space metamorphosis will be chasing me forever.. Erkin and Andrew , how did you guys survive this? I mean how did you survive the real world after that beauty inside us? That real world presented to us by Tronald Dump I mean... I felt like this computer generated hologram read my night dreams... This game has no name but this name has the game. If I had to choose what to be in that world I would be Natasha... or sorry.. in the other one: The Eye. The one observing what it creates. Many beauties!
But the fun has finished up with the equation, in complex formula wrapping up in "this" equal to "that".. The exhibition ended... I highly recommend you all to see it but watch the Botanical one after and go for a short stroll in the forest around the property of Heide Museum,,, as driving might be very dangerous after the computer dreams...
Note: I could have written all of the above from the perspective of the art expert ... As I am not the one I have chosen to write following the eyes of the common exhibition visitor... and well, come along with your family and kids - the latter will looooooove the technology... It is their world as they still remember it from the source. ... My nest exhibition...

EN ROUTE WONA BAE AND CHARLIE LAWLER
Wona Bae and Charlie Lawler are known for their experiential installations that navigate instinctive and symbiotic connections between people and nature. For En Route the artists have created site-specific immersive artworks that respond spatially and temporally to the modernist building, Heide II. Using botanical material and a language of texture and reduction, they deconstruct familiar forms and compose new landscapes to be considered and explored. Bae and Lawler present the natural world as active and central in an era of polarisation, inequality, inaction and apathy. The exhibition combines installation, sculpture, two-dimensional artworks, and photographs documenting ephemeral interventions made by the artists over several months in the surrounds of Heide and beyond.
TERMINUS JESS JOHNSON and SIMON WARD
With their pioneering use of virtual reality, artists Jess Johnson and Simon Ward have created an immersive installation in which Johnson's drawings have been transformed from analogue to digital. A mysterious universe of alien architecture, humanoid clones and cryptic symbols will open up to the viewer via a cyber network of travellators and gateways.Terminus presents a quest, a choose-your-own adventure into the technological. Prepare yourself for a slippage of time and space as your journey propels you through spectacular cyber narratives: you will pass through Fleshold Crossing; take respite in Known Unknown; lose yourself within Scumm Engine; bravely face impending danger in the tower of Gog & Magog; and experience the brink of sensory overload in the psychedelic scenes of Tumblewych. A number of drawings and textile works by Jess Johnson especially selected for Heide will also be displayed. Please note: This exhibition is very popular. If you are planning to visit on the weekend we advise coming early in the day (10am–12pm) to avoid queues. Alternatively, plan your visit for a week day when the galleries are quieter. Allow one hour to experience all of the five VR stations.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM
Heide Museum of Modern Art began life in 1934 as the home of Melbourne couple John and Sunday Reed and has since evolved into one of Australia's most important cultural institutions. Soon after purchasing the fifteen acre property on which Heide stands in 1934, founders John and Sunday Reed opened their home to like-minded individuals such as artists Sidney Nolan, Albert Tucker, Joy Hester, John Perceval and Danila Vassilieff. They nurtured a circle of artists, writers and intellectuals who contributed to Heide becoming a place for the discussion, creation and promotion of modern art and literature. John and Sunday made a lasting contribution to Australian culture through their support of creative endeavours in the visual arts, literature and architecture. In the mid-1950s the Reeds established the Gallery of Contemporary Art and in 1958, with the assistance of friend and entrepreneur Georges Mora, they re-launched the gallery as the Museum of Modern Art of Australia. This eventually led to the formal establishment of the museum. Amassing an outstanding collection of the contemporary art of their time, the Reeds outgrew their original farmhouse, now known as Heide I, and in 1964 commissioned the construction of a ‘gallery to be lived in’ from David McGlashan. This modernist architectural icon eventually opened as a public art museum in November 1981 following its purchase by the State Government on behalf of the people of Victoria. Although the Reeds lived to see their vision fulfilled of Heide as a public museum, they both died shortly afterwards in December 1981, ten days apart. They are remembered as champions of modern art and literature and remain two of Australia's most important art benefactors.
