"Tetsuya Umeda’s installations are as much about the sounds, as they are about the arrangement of everyday items he uses. Umeda’s main work is the object’s performance, which he helps orchestrate, but is never in control of” The Japan Times
Japan’s master artist of sonic visual sensations, Tetsuya Umeda is set to thrill with his site specific occupation. Tetsuya Umeda’s practice straddles performing art, improvisational music and exhibition. He creates lively environs by melding architectural structures, objects, sound and light. His richly dynamic and embodied installations are often situated outside of the gallery context. Umeda's temporal works utilise found domestic items, transforming them from their daily familiarity into a spectacle of the unexpected. The transparent process taking place before the audience’s eyes, exposing viewers as both witnesses and collaborators as they engage with his interactive performance pieces.
The Japanese artist has held a number of significant solo exhibitions including Ota Fine Arts Singapore, Singapore (2013), “Age0”, Breaker Project, Osaka (2014) and “Science of Superstition”, Sonic Protest Festival, Montreal (2015). He has also participated in performing arts and music festivals in Asia and Europe including the 1st Aichi Triennale 2010: Arts and Cities, Nagoya (2010); Double Vision: Contemporary Art From Japa,n Moscow Museum of Modern Art, Moscow / Haifa Museum of Art, Haifa (2012); Simple Interactions. Sound Art from Japan, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde, Roskilde (2011). Melbourne Fringe and Zilla & Brook Publicity invite you to
DATES: 28-30 September
VENUE: Wonderland Spiegeltent
What do you get when you combine an angelic falsetto voice, an amplified 1950s guitar, alongside the greatest music of J.S. Bach, Morrissey and Judy Garland? Alternative Baroque. This World Premier brings together some of the most profound, contrasting styles in western music and the result is not fusion, it’s chemistry.
The Great Pretender combines the songs of Garland, Morrissey and Elvis with the greatest sacred music of J.S. Bach. The show features the ethereal countertenor voice of Max Riebl, who combines his mastery as a baroque musician with the pure vocal power and authenticity of an emerging pop artist.
Max has performed as a soloist in Sydney’s Angel Place, the Melbourne Recital Centre and Hamer Hall, the Forum, the Vienna Musikverein and the Royal Albert Hall. He studied baroque and early music at the the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
He has received top prizes in the Australian Singing Competition, the London Handel Competition, Herald Sun Aria and the Chicago International Classical Singer Competition.

Xui Xui ….are experimental in the most literal meaning - not musicians exploring "experimental genres" of music, but ones who actually experiment, leading to music whose ideas travel the map so broadly as to be deemed unclassifiable when put together. PITCHFORK
Following performances throughout Europe, Russia and America including David Lynch's Festival of Disruption in LA, The SUBSTATION presents the Melbourne Premiere of Xiu Xiu Plays The Music Of Twin Peaks. The American experimental pop group’s performance is a genre-breaking interpretation of the U.S TV series’ iconic music.
Xiu Xiu was commissioned by the Queensland Art Gallery's Australian Cinémathèque in 2015 to reinterpret the music of the TV series for the exhibition David Lynch: Between Two Worlds and has since performed their haunting captures of Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch’s compositions to sell-out audiences across the world.
Led by Jamie Stewart, Angela Seo and Shayna Dunkelman, Xiu Xiu emphasise the music’s chaos and drama. Their musings are a complex mix of post punk and synth pop, classical and experimental styles, full of brutality and emotional depth.
Xiu Xiu Plays The Music Of Twin Peaks other Australian performances include Dark Mofo on the 18th June, which has already sold out, as well as Queensland Art Gallery Of Modern Art on 24th June. Each performance at The SUBSTATION will be presented as a double bill of sonic offerings with Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) taking stage on opening night and Sarah Davachi closing out the season.
Thanks to our friends at Prue Bassett Publicity Bohemian Rhapsody Club and Online Magazine will be proudly covering the Friday 23 June concert with Sarah Davachi (media: Emmylou MacCarthy at @emmylou_loves and Fabrizio Evans at Group 42) Please stay tuned for more details we will be revealing soon..
