National Gallery of Victoria invite you to experience
The Picasso Century | Melbourne Winter Masterpieces 2022
DATES: 10 June - 09 October 2022
LOCATION: National Gallery of Victoria, NGV International, Ground Level
WEBSITE: https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/the-picasso-century/
TICKETS: https://connect.ngv.vic.gov.au/49132
he world-premiere Melbourne Winter Masterpieces® exhibition, The Picasso Century, charts the extraordinary career of Pablo Picasso in dialogue with the many artists, poets and intellectuals with whom he intercepted and interacted throughout the 20th century, including Georges Braque, Salvador Dalí, Alberto Giacometti, Françoise Gilot, Valentine Hugo, Marie Laurencin, Dora Maar, André Masson, Henri Matisse, Guillaume Apollinaire, Dorothea Tanning and Gertrude Stein. Exclusively developed for the NGV by the Centre Pompidou and the Musée national Picasso-Paris, the exhibition features over 80 works by Picasso alongside over 100 works by more than 50 of his contemporaries, drawn from premier French national collections, as well as the NGV Collection. Audiences will also have the opportunity to discover a rich selection of works by artists rarely exhibited in Australia, including Natalia Goncharova, Julio González, Wifredo Lam, Suzanne Valadon and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva.
Curated by noted scholar of 20th century painting Didier Ottinger, Deputy Director of the Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris, The Picasso Century examines the diverse influences, encounters and collaborative relationships that steered Picasso through many distinct artistic periods, such as his Blue Period, Cubism and Surrealism, and draws lines between Picasso’s famous creations and the world around him. By exploring Picasso’s career through his personal, artistic and intellectual engagement with his peers, the exhibition provides a unique insight into the artistic legacy of one of the 20th century’s most influential and celebrated artists, as well as the community of artists from which he emerged.
Twelve thematic sections organise The Picasso Century, which trace the many distinct periods that shaped the artist’s career over more than seven decades, while also situating his work within a broader artistic and geographical context. Each exhibition section provides a nuanced perspective on a rich century of artistic experiment, in which Picasso stands prominently among many innovators. The beginning of the exhibition explores Picasso’s formative years, which encapsulate significant artistic developments, most notably Cubism, the development of which Picasso led with Georges Braque. Considered by many the ‘experiment’ that most radically transformed 20th century art, Cubism saw Western art move away from representing likeness and, among many innovations, introduced multiple and simultaneous perspectives into a composition, resulting in the style’s recognisable fragmented imagery.
The Picasso Century also examines Picasso’s place within the multicultural crucible that was inter-war Paris, and his interaction with other artists and writers including André Breton, Jean Cocteau and Alberto Giacometti. The exhibition will be particularly rich with works from Picasso’s Surrealist period, presented alongside works by many other artists associated with the movement, including Kay Sage, Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, Giorgio de Chirico and André Masson. The final sections of the exhibition explore Picasso’s work in an increasingly international art world post–1945 and examines the contested artistic output towards the end of his career. His work of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s are positioned alongside later generations of painters, including Francis Bacon and Willem de Kooning.
The inevitable question of Picasso’s legacy in the 21st century will be posed through the inclusion of the video I see a woman crying, 2009 by Rineke Dijkstra. This engaging contemporary work invites reflection on Picasso’s position as a point of reference for all who seek to understand the history of 20th century art.

Yang Chun Lin / Gu A Xin of GU A XIN, China

25/2/2022

ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase, #AFDS, thehomeground asia, #THG, ASEAN International Digital Fashion Week and Dressed AU PR present
Yang Chun Lin / Gu A Xin of GU A XIN, China
as part of #IDFW22 #AIDFW season 2022 (6th JAN 2022) https://aseanfashiondesignersshowcase.wordpress.com/asea.../ and https://thehomeground.asia/.../asean-international.../
• Yang Chun Lin, famously known as Gu A Xin is a China entrepreneur, and fashion designer who was born on 15th March 1989.
• This award-winning designer is a native of Miao Village in south eastern Guizhou Province.
• Gu A Xin - the name given by his father, has both a Miao and Chinese meaning to it - "Gu A Xin" means "hope" in Miao and in Chinese accent means Gu A Xin directly.
• A Xin's father registered the "Gu-A- Xin" clothing company, in hope that "Miao" elements of clothing to be passed on to the new generation of young people. Unfortunately, due to his father’s illness, the company did not start operation after starting the company.
• During A Xin first year in college, he always tried to find things that he could create and sell, he and his friends set up a street stall selling Miao Village crafts and launched the Gu-A-Xin brand, featuring Miao village special products, silver jewellery, handicrafts, and some upcycled ready-made garments incorporated with Miao village traditional elements. Unhappy with these ready-made garments, it sparked off the artistic and creative side of A Xin, propelling him to design his own garments and gradually transforming the street brand into a well-known and popular local brand.
• A Xin is not a design major. He graduated from Xi’an University with a major in journalism, and because of the natural acumen of journalism, it made it easier for him to edge out the difference between Gu-A-Xin and other China clothing brands.
• His forte is Miao embroidery - exaggerated, bold, and abstract. It is full of imagination of the mysterious world of dragon and phoenix, traditional auspiciousness, fishes, deer, longevity and wealth, auspicious beasts, blessing peace, butterflies, and children just to name a few. He hopes that this will make more people to aware of the beauty of Miao embroidery, and this also enables Miao women with the skills to be able to pick up the embroidery needle again to create a livelihood for their families.
• In 2008, Gu A Xin won the Silver Award of Guizhou Intangible Cultural Heritage. In 2009, Gu A Ain won the "Colourful Guizhou" Skilled Craftsman Gold Award. In 2011, Gu A Xin developed the men's cotton and linen embroidery series and won the National Embroidery Award Silver Award. In 2012, Gu A Xin won the top 20 of Shaanxi Innovation Competition.
• In 2013, Gu A Xin was invited to Dragon TV's "Dream Cube Program" and in 2014, opened stores in Xi'an Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Beijing Qianmen, Shanghai Tianzifang and many other places. In 2015, he participated in the financial channel "Dream Next Stop" and won the Dream Fund Card, which was well received by entrepreneurs.
• Gu-A-Xin style is one that most people can connect with, not only it is classy, but traditional too. It is funky and chic. Many celebrities and people love his designs.
• Gu A Xin is an esteem member of the ASEAN Fashion Designers Showcase representing China.

Goya: Drawings from the Prado Museum

26/6/2021

GLAD TO ANNOUNCE THAT NGV IS RE-OPENING FROM FRIDAY 25 June 2021
National Gallery of Victoria invites you to visit:
Goya: Drawings from the Prado Museum
DATES: 25 Jun 21 – 3 Oct 21
LOCATION: NGV International Ground Level
W: https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/goya/
The world-exclusive exhibition Goya: Drawings from the Prado Museum features more than 160 works on paper by Francisco Goya (1746–1828), celebrating the artist’s extraordinary imagination. Goya is considered to be one of the first truly modern artists. In humorous observations, confronting depictions of violence, and surreal flights of fantasy, he presents a vision of humanity that had no equivalent in the art of his day. Goya: Drawings from the Prado Museum features 44 drawings on loan from the Prado Museum in Madrid, the largest group of Goya’s drawings ever seen in Australia. Ranging from bold ink to delicate red chalk drawings, the works on display have been selected by the Prado especially for this NGV presentation. They include examples from the artist’s earliest albums of social satires through to the enigmatic visions and dreams recorded in his late drawings. This rich and diverse selection of drawings showcases the breadth of Goya’s drawing practice, as well as offering a rare insight into the artist’s image-making process.
The works from the Prado collection are complemented by 120 etchings from Goya’s renowned print series, including the Caprichos 1797–98, which satirised vices and follies in Spanish society; the Disasters of War 1810–15, based on the atrocities of the war and famine that followed the Napoleonic invasion of Spain in 1808; the Tauromaquia c. 1815–16 on the subject of bullfighting; and the enigmatic Disparates c. 1815–19, made during the reign of Ferdinand VII, whose suppression of civil liberties affected the lives of many intellectuals and reformers, including Goya and his friends. The prints are drawn from the NGV Collection with fifteen works on loan from the Art Gallery of South Australia.
