Met-gala-meet-circus as our graduating students walk the tight wire between real and ridiculous. With a red carpet greeting, the show begins the minute audiences enter the building. Followed by fashion-fuelled buffoonery and outrageous skills on aerial ring, roue cyr, handstands, trapeze, bounce juggling, corde lisse, Chinese pole and hula hoops - all set to stun. Emceed by the infamous Valarie Hex (YUMMY) and curated by NICA’s Creative Team, this 12-strong cohort of disruptors are the circus industry’s newest ones to watch. Having worked closely with Artistic Consultants Katie Cawthorne, Kyall Shanks, Jess Love and Jess McCrindle, NICA’s graduating circus artists have sharpened their industry-ready acts. NICA’s Head of Circus, James Brown (2015 – Present) and the creative team have also been pushing the student’s ideas on what the future of circus can be, and experimenting with live-feed cameras and projections within their acts. James said: “Circus borrows all the best bits from dance, music and multimedia. We are always discovering where circus and technology intersect. These artists are walking those edges." Fun, dazzling and downright audacious. Made To Measure will leave audiences sparkling with awe. The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) is Australia’s Centre of Excellence for training in contemporary circus arts. It is one of eight national arts training institutes and offers Australia’s only Bachelor of Circus Arts. CIRCONOCLASM DATES: 14-17 September (Preview 13 Sept) at 0200pm Matinee and 0730pm Evenings LOCATION: #NICA National Circus Centre, 39 – 59 Green Street, Prahran WEBSITE: https://nica.com.au/performs // https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/940791 NICA Performs presents CIRCONOCLASM taking place Wednesday 14 – Saturday 17 September at NICA National Circus Centre (NNCC Building). Directed by David Woods, CIRCONOCLASM has been devised with NICA 2nd year students. Iconoclasm (the theft or wilful damage of artworks) is an age-old practice that continues to serve as a powerful modus operadni for those wanting to capture the world’s attention in a moment of meaningful cultural defiance. To this very day, iconoclasm remains a provocative act that brings issues of the day into sharp focus – so what does that mean for the future of modern circus? Enter CIRCONOCLASM: An art-heist inspired by the infamous NGV Picasso theft by the “Australian Cultural Terrorists” and every heist movie ever... Directed by David Woods (Ridiculusmus Theatre Company, London) and devised by the students, the curtain opens as Seurat’s triptych of pointillist paintings on circus are gathered for the first time in a big splash for the National Australia Gallery. Though armed with a veritable fortress of high-tech security, the paintings are stolen in a daring heist during the swanky opening party. We encourage you to expect the unexpected with hoop diving, tightwire and teeterboards entangled in the unfolding drama of the ultimate circus art-heist. “My expectation is that the students will gleefully play within the constructs I have imagined with a degree of democracy and ownership,” says Director David Woods. “Though ultimately, I maintain final artistic decisions, the autonomy rests with each artist, allowing myself and the senior creative team to provide an overarching aesthetic and performance grammar for this next generation of cirque talent.” NICA’s Head of Circus, James Brown (2016 – Present), encourages audiences to shake off the dust by returning to live performance. “We have all had a challenging few years, and what better than to escape to the theatre to witness Australia’s up and coming circus talent. These students have the pleasure of working with International Director, David Woods, and his unique character and comedy approach to Circus is not to be missed.” CIRCONOCLASM promises to be immersive, hilarious, and admirable. The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) is Australia’s Centre of Excellence for training in contemporary circus arts. Embark on a journey with us as we explore the story of this changing world. What would we change if we could? What is this ‘new normal’ we face? What world do we want ours to be like? Inspired by The Pandemic is a Portal by Arundhati Roy, ECLIPSE offers a gateway to a vision of what our future could, should, would and might just be. Exploring unity, diversity, harmony, balance, trust, compromise, our humanity, and our fragility; what can we build and create together? Devised with the graduating company, conceived by Sally Richardson (Director of Steamworks Arts, Artistic Director of Maxima Circus), directed by Meredith Kitchen (Associate Director at South Australian Circus Centre) and in-house performance studies co-ordinator Ben Sheen (Director/Founder of Periscope Productions 2011 – Present), ECLIPSE is a cross-faculty collaboration with Film Students from Swinburne University of Technology Film and Television and make-up students from Melbourne Polytechnic. ECLIPSE welcomes NICA’s first public-facing production since 2019. Twelve enduring and talented students have been pressurised by lockdowns into diamonds, ready to showcase a thrilling live performance filled with acrobatics, corde-lisse, trapeze, aerial hoop, tightwire, roue cyr, handstands, foot juggling and hula hoop. Artfully paired with the dazzling live opera vocals of one of Australia’s finest interpreters of contemporary vocal repertoire, Judith Dodsworth (Greta in Brian Howard’s Metamorphosis with Victoria Opera, as well as the title role and Mercedes in Carmen for OzOpera), a live electronic and percussive score by Louis Frere-Harvey (Command Q, Structural Dependency) and dynamic visual set and costume design by Eloise Kent and Angelica Ru (The Darkening Sky, TheatreWorks in 2022, THIS at Rising Festival in 2021) ECLIPSE will leave audiences blinded by surprise. Raven Mad DATES: 1-3 April at 0400pm and 0630pm VENUE: Prahran Square, corner of Izzett and Chatham Streets, Prahran WEBSITE: https://www.nica.com.au/raven-mad TICKETS: www.comedyfestival.com.au/2022/shows/raven-mad/ Directed by Mike Finch and designed by Emily Barrie. Proudly supported by The City of Stonnington Join us in Prahran Square from this April Fools’ Day weekend for an absurd circus street-battle between the local bureaucratic ravens and an eccentric family of hard-rubbish collectors… all unpacked from a blue box-trailer! SHOW DESCRIPTION A suburban family of eccentrics have travelled on foot from the east (the Dandenongs) to settle in the west, the long-promised land of Sunshine. Like bowerbirds, Nan, Jan, Mindy and Scot have been collecting blue hard rubbish from the nature strips along the way – blue clothing, blue baggage, blue utensils, a barbeque, not one but two blue shopping trolleys, all piled in a full-sized blue box-trailer! However, the local bureaucratic ravens consider this gaudy traveling junk-show as a territorial challenge and swoop down to patrol the borders and if necessary send this family back to where they came from – the east ... Dandenong. Mayhem ensues, and the show descends into an absurd vaudevillian circus street-battle for freedom! Expect acrobatics, foot-juggling, skipping, disco, hula-hoops, meteor-bowls, slapstick, mouth-sticking, hand-balancing, slipper-kicking, ball-manipulation, bottle-balancing, contortion, improvisation, ladder-walking, bag-pipe-impersonation, box-stepping and barbecuing. Made as a comic circus response to our collective current circumstances, social distancing, borders opening (and closing and opening again!) The world needs a show that can be performed literally anywhere, that meets an all-ages audiences where they are – socially distanced and outdoors! After two years of lockdowns, this show celebrates getting together again for live entertainment and comedy! It reignites the shared experience of performance through inclusive audience interaction, circus spectacle, inventive production, costume design, upcycling and recycling found objects. Originally conceived by Melenie Stevenson (National Institute of Circus Arts – NICA), Emily Barrie (Moomba, Rawcus, Ilbijerri Theatre Company) and co-devised by Director Mike Finch (Artistic Director Circus Oz 1997-2015) this show celebrates some incredibly skilled alumni of NICA, Emily’s eccentric and eye-catching found-object design, Mike’s sense of comic circus ensemble, and stars some of Australia’s best new and internationally seasoned circus talent: ‘TaraBoom’ Silcock, Hannah Richards, Joshua Phillips, Jarred Dewey, Olivia Porter and Tully Fedorowjtsch. With an extraordinarily broad range of ridiculous and jaw-dropping circus and performance skills between them, this is an all-ages comic street-circus battle of a hundred skills! Raven Mad is aimed squarely at the broadest possible all-ages audience, this is a shared celebratory, spectacular and comic event in an unexpected outdoor setting. We consider ourselves part of a global movement to democratise theatre and make live performance culture more accessible to all-backgrounds, all-ages audiences who may feel excluded by 'high'-culture, high ticket prices, exclusive indoor ‘arts’ venues or culturally inaccessible traditions. This is spectacular, funny, skilled circus-theatre for everyone!
