Verdi's Il Trovatore presented by Citi Opera at Athanaeum Theatre Melbourne 25 February http://www.citiopera.com.au/
Citi Opera proudly presents Verdi's Il Trovatore
Following the outstanding success of Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos and Rossini's La Cenerentola, #CitiOpera returns with a stunning production of Verdi’s Il Trovatore. This magnificent opera stars an outstanding international cast, headed by Korea National Opera’s Principal Tenor Yoon Byung Kil as Manrico, 2015 Herald Sun Aria winner Fiona Jopson as Leonora, the outstanding Helen Hill as Azucena, emerging young talent Samuel Thomas-Holland as Count di Luna and Opera Australia’s Eddie Muliaumaseali’i as Ferrando.
Direct from Italy, Maestro Gaetano Colajanni leads CitiOpera’s celebrated Orchestra and Chorus. Previous successes with CitiOpera include Verdi’s Otello and Leoncavallo’s Cavalleria Rusticana. Directed by Stella Axarlis AM, the production reflects the rich tradition of operatic passion, violence and love on stage. Axarlis, who has made the transition from world-renowned singer to passionate director, has led a number of highly acclaimed productions, including Otello, Cavalleria Rusticana and Ariadne auf Naxos.
This is not a production to be missed!
Frankston and Wyndham performances feature Michael Lapiña as Manrico, Amanda Atlas as Leonora, Michael Lampard as Count di Luna, Selena Pettifer as Azucena, Eddie Muliaumaseali’i as Ferrando and will be conducted by CitiOpera’s music director, Alan Cook.

A little gold can change everything! Matthew McConaughey and Bryce Dallas Howard star in GOLD, based on a too good to be true story. In cinemas from February 2. #GoldMovie http://bit.ly/2jRWje6
From director Stephen Gaghan (Academy Award® winning writer of TRAFFIC) and starring Matthew McConaughey, Bryce Dallas Howard and Edgar Ramirez comes an incredible true story of one man’s dream to find gold.
Kenny Wells (McConaughey) is a modern day prospector, hustler, and dreamer, desperate for a lucky break. Left with few options, Wells teams up with an equally luckless geologist to execute a grandiose, last-ditch effort: to find gold deep in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia.
The film stars Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey (INTERSTELLAR, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, THE WOLF OF WALL STREET) and Golden Globe nominees Edgar Ramirez (HANDS OF STONE, THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN) and Bryce Dallas Howard (JURASSIC WORLD, PETE’S DRAGON).
Thanks to our friends at #AshaHolmesPublicity and STUDIOCANAL we have 5 double passes to give away to this film. To be in the draw like, share and comment on this post telling us what are the other films you know starring Matthew McConaughey. Alternatively PM or email me your answers to firstname.lastname@example.org . This offer closes on Thursday, January 26 at 0600pm. Only winners will be notified. Good luck!
Cinema Nova exclusively and Jameson & Co PR present a new movie called The Coming War on China in cinema from Feb 9 http://www.cinemanova.com.au/movies/12443.php
From journalist provocateur John Pilger comes a compelling political documentary that highlights the growing likelihood of a second cold war, this time between the United States and China.
A nuclear war between the United States and China is not only imaginable but a current ‘contingency’, says the Pentagon. John Pilger’s 60th film and first since 2013’s Utopia is his most urgent work to date and is both a warning and an inspiring story of resistance. The Coming War on China, filmed over two years across five potential flashpoints in Asia and the Pacific, reveals the build-up to war on more than 400 US military bases that encircle China in a ‘perfect noose’.
Using rare archive and remarkable interviews with witnesses, Pilger’s film discloses America’s secret history in the region – the destruction wrought by the equivalent of one Hiroshima every day for 12 years, and the top secret ‘Project 4.1’ that made guinea pigs of the population of the Marshall Islands. In key interviews from Pentagon war planners to members of China’s confident new political class - who rarely feature in Western reports, Pilger’s film challenges the notion and propaganda of China as a new ‘enemy’.
The giveaway to win two double passes to this film was run via sms and fb messaging. The winners are: Jasna Duronjic and Santosh Chacko. Please note that we will also be reviewing this film. Please stay tuned for more information.
National Gallery of Victoria present #WhosAfraidOfColour exhibition
NGV AUSTRALIA, FEDERATION SQUARE LEVEL 3, INDIGENOUS ART from 16 DEC 16 – 17 APR 17
OPEN 10AM–5PM DAILY
This exhibition brings together presentations of work by a broad range of Indigenous women artists, whose practice is unbounded by convention. It includes bold statements that explore colour and assert the politics of identity. Customary woven objects and modern works will jostle in the same space, with digital, synthetic and organic materials alternating unexpectedly. The poetics of mourning will oscillate with paintings of wondrous joy and photographs that expose Indigenous disadvantage and repugnant instances of institutionalised racism.
The exhibition looks at a number of major artists in depth, including Julie Gough, Destiny Deacon, Emily Kam Kngwarray, Bindi Cole Chocka, Queenie McKenzie and Nonggirrnga Marawili, from both city and bush studios, and features large bodies of work from the NGV Collection that have never been shown together before. Outspoken invention, risk taking and energy are palpable in works of Samantha Hobson and Claudia Moodoonuthi as are intimate moments of quiet reflection in the feather headdresses of Lisa Michl.
5 Feb, 1pm Learn more about the Indigenous women artists on display whose work boldly and colourfully explores politics and identity through painting, weaving and digital media
