ECLIPSE NICA 3rd year ensemble show 2022
DATES: Thursday 9 June 2022 - Saturday 18 June 2022

WEBSITE: https://www.nica.com.au/performs

Eclipses are harbingers of change – they usher in an evolution. Embark on a journey with us as we explore the story of this changing world. What would we change if we could? What is this ‘new normal’ we face? What world do we want ours to be like?
Inspired by The Pandemic is a Portal by Arundhati Roy, ECLIPSE offers a gateway to a vision of what our future could, should, would and might just be. Exploring unity, diversity, harmony, balance, trust, compromise, our humanity, and our fragility; what can we build and create together? Devised with the graduating company, conceived by Sally Richardson (Director of Steamworks Arts, Artistic Director of Maxima Circus), directed by Meredith Kitchen (Associate Director at South Australian Circus Centre) and in-house performance studies co-ordinator Ben Sheen (Director/Founder of Periscope Productions 2011 – Present), ECLIPSE is a cross-faculty collaboration with Film Students from Swinburne University of Technology Film and Television and make-up students from Melbourne Polytechnic.
ECLIPSE welcomes NICA’s first public-facing production since 2019. Twelve enduring and talented students have been pressurised by lockdowns into diamonds, ready to showcase a thrilling live performance filled with acrobatics, corde-lisse, trapeze, aerial hoop, tightwire, roue cyr, handstands, foot juggling and hula hoop. Artfully paired with the dazzling live opera vocals of one of Australia’s finest interpreters of contemporary vocal repertoire, Judith Dodsworth (Greta in Brian Howard’s Metamorphosis with Victoria Opera, as well as the title role and Mercedes in Carmen for OzOpera), a live electronic and percussive score by Louis Frere-Harvey (Command Q, Structural Dependency) and dynamic visual set and costume design by Eloise Kent and Angelica Ru (The Darkening Sky, TheatreWorks in 2022, THIS at Rising Festival in 2021) ECLIPSE will leave audiences blinded by surprise.
NICA is Australia’s Centre of Excellence for training in contemporary circus arts. It is one of eight national arts training institutes and offers Australia’s only Bachelor of Circus Arts. Content Warning: PG (parental guidance recommended). The show may also contain loud sound effects, smoke/haze and strobe lighting.
All thanks to our friends at Zilla & Brook, Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine is covering the VIP opening night for media (media: Kieran McNamara) . please stay tuned for more details.

in cinemas 12 May
et in 1943, the film follows two brilliant intelligence officers, Ewen Montagu (Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley (Macfadyen) who conceived a plan that was dubbed Operation Mincemeat. Their plan was to get a corpse, equip it with misleading papers, then drop it off the coast of Spain where Nazi spies would take the bait.

German Film Festival 2022

Palace Cinemas and Miranda Brown Publicity in cooperation with German Films invite you to enjoy
German Film Festival 2022
DATES: 24 May - 22 June https://germanfilmfestival.com.au/festival-dates
LOCATIONS: Palace Cinemas in Sydney | Canberra | Melbourne | Adelaide | Perth | Brisbane | Byron Bay https://germanfilmfestival.com.au/venues
WEBSITE: https://germanfilmfestival.com.au/
ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
From this May to June the 2022 German Film Festival presented by Palace, in association with German Films, showcases the best contemporary German cinema direct from major festivals in Europe plus a selection from its German-speaking neighbours, Austria and Switzerland. The festival’s Special Presentation is DEAR THOMAS (Lieber Thomas), a historical monochrome biopic of East German writer and filmmaker Thomas Brasch, starring Albrecht Schuch (Fabian: Going to the Dogs - GFF21). Brasch a German-Jewish emigrant was born in England and moved to the GDR with his family in the 1950s. As he grows into a prolific writer and poetic rebel, he struggles with the reality of censorship in communist East Germany.
Festival highlights include the gripping historical drama THE LAST EXECUTION (Nahschuss) stars Lars Eidinger and is based on the real-life case of Werner Teske. Tempted by the offer of a prestigious professorship, an ambitious scientist is convinced to work for the GDR's Stasi in 1981 East Berlin but is soon accused of espionage. The smart comedy CONTRA directed by Sönke Wortmann stars Christoph Maria Herbsts, Nilam Farooq and Hassan Akkouch. A law student prepares for a debating competition with the help of a cynical professor who has been given a final chance to redeem himself after a video of him insulting a student goes viral.
The Goethe-Institut will again contribute the popular sidebar ‘Kino for Kids’, in addition to a celebration of the organisation’s 50-year anniversary in Australia, with a special selection of films from the 1970s to the 2020s. The festival screens nationally at Palace Cinemas, Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas and Luna Palace Cinemas.
All thanks to our friends at Miranda Brown Publicity, Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine is invited to a media exclusive opening party with film screening of Daniele Luchetti's stylish new drama THE FORGER ( Der Passfäler ) (media: Kieran McNamara)
Berlin, 1942. A young Jewish man, Cioma Schönhaus (rising star Louis Hofmann, Dark, Land of Mine), refuses to let the Nazis take away his zest for life. When he discovers his talent for forging documents – especially passports – he sees this as the ideal way to help not only himself but also others escape deportation. Thanks to his knack for creating new identities, he dares to venture out, hiding in plain sight and navigating around the authorities with inventiveness and charm. He throws himself into the city’s nightlife with his friends Det (Jonathan Berlin, Summer of 44) and Gerda (Luna Wedler), and even catches a fragile glimpse of love in seemingly hopeless times. But the more lives the trio saves, the more the noose tightens around them.
Directed and written by Maggie Peren, The Forger is based on the true story Samson “Cioma” Schönhaus, a Jewish graphic artist who forged documents to help others escape the Nazis. In this illuminating drama, Hofmann embodies Schönhaus’ indomitable optimism and determination, even in the darkest moments, to focus on the light. https://germanfilmfestival.com.au/films/the-forger

AFTER AIDA - A Comedy with Music

LOCATION: Athenaeum Theatre 2, 188 Collins St, Melbourne, VIC, 3000
WEBSITE AND TICKETS: https://www.pureharmonymusic.com.au/.../after-aida-a...
Five actors, four-opera singers, and one iconic opera in the making. A Live reading/concert. Brought to you by Circle in the Sand and Pure Harmony Music & Events Directed by David Meadows Musical Direction by Adrian Tamburini
It is 1879. Giuseppe Verdi, Italy’s greatest and most beloved composer, has not written an opera for nearly a decade. What is to be done? Verdi's closest associates, publisher Giulio Ricori and conductor Franco Faccio are determined to get the Maestro working again.
With the aid of Verdi's wife, Giuseppina, they conspire to team him with the brilliant operatic wordsmith, Arrigo Boito, and the greatest tragic opera ever written - Otello - is conceived. But trouble is looming. Boito hasn't always had nice things to say about Verdi. And at 66 years of age, the man himself isn't sure he can cut it anymore. Who said art was easy?
"....conceived with wit and clarity, written with singular style...infused with quality!" (Western Mail, UK) Julian Mitchell's play include the Olivier-Award-winning, "Another Country", "Francis" (about St Francis of Assisi), both of which starred Kenneth Branagh in their original West End runs, and "The Evils of Tobacco"; his screenplays include, "Vincent & Theo", "August", and "Wilde"; his novels include, "The White Father", "A Circle of Friends", and "The Undiscovered Country".

Back to Back Theatre, Monash University Performing Arts Centres, Monash University, Zilla & Brook, MLIVE and Alexander Theatre invite you to experience:
The Shadow Whose Prey The Hunter Becomes
DATES: 19-20 May 0730pm
LOCATION: Alexander Theatre, The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts, 48 Exhibition Walk, Clayton
WEBSITE AND TICKETS: https://www.monash.edu/perfor.../event/back-to-back-theatre/#
The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes is a story about a public meeting, the type of meeting you would hope to happen in a certain kind of democracy. How do we come together to make decisions that are in the best interest of a civic society?
Don’t miss this remarkable production by world-renowned Australian company, Back To Back Theatre; winners of the 2022 International Ibsen Award and SXSW Audience Award.
Coming to Monash University Performing Arts Centres this May is leading Australian theatre company, Back to Back Theatre with The Shadow Whose Prey The Hunter Becomes. Recent recipients of the international Ibsen award, dubbed the ‘ Nobel Prize for Theatre’ and the SXSW Audience Award for their screen adaptation of Shadow, Back to Back Theatre is recognised as a company that has brought new artistic dimensions to the world of theatre.
Weaving a narrative through human rights, sexual politics, and the projected dominance of artificial intelligence, The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes is a sly theatrical revelation inspired by mistakes, mis-readings, mis-leadings and misunderstanding, Shadow reminds us that none of us are self-sufficient and all of us are responsible. Back to Back Theatre creates new forms of contemporary performance imagined from the minds and experiences of a unique ensemble of actors with a disability, giving voice to social and political issues that speak to all people. Based in the regional centre of Geelong, the company is one of Australia’s most globally recognised and respected contemporary theatre companies.
In addition to its professional practice, Back to Back collaborates intensively with communities around the world, with a focus on artistic excellence and elevated social inclusion for people with disabilities. THE SHADOW WHOSE PREY THE HUNTER BECOMES has been co-commissioned by Carriageworks, Theater der Welt, Düsseldorf 2020, the Keir Foundation, the Thyne Reid Foundation and The Anthony Costa Foundation, supported by Creative Partnerships Australia through Plus 1, with development support from the Geelong Arts Centre, Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Une Parkinson Foundation, The Public Theater (New York City) and ArtsEmerson (Boston).
THE SHADOW WHOSE PREY THE HUNTER BECOMES was developed, in part, at the 2019 Sundance Theatre Lab at MASS MoCA.

Roadshow invite you to watch a new history drama called The Drover's Wife The Legend of Molly Johnson
in cinemas 5 May
1893, the Australian Outback. The area is rough, the people hard-nosed, the law rather secondary. Here, women - and newcomers anyway - quickly become the pawn of men. Even Nate Clintoff, who is new in town to keep law and order, still has to fight for his place in the hierarchy. Molly Johnson, heavily pregnant and alone with her children on a farm far from town, knows her place only too well. Nevertheless, she doesn't let it get her down. She does everything to protect her children. Everything.
