Sharmill Films invite you to watch a new theatre comedy called National Theatre Live Much Ado About Nothing
in cinemas December 3
Shakespeare’s much-loved comedy of new beginnings. Escape to the Italian Riviera with a cast including Katherine Parkinson (Home, I'm Darling, The IT Crowd) and John Heffernan (Dracula, She Stoops to Conquer). Since the 1930s, the legendary family-run Hotel Messina has been visited by artists, celebrities and royalty. When the current owner’s daughter falls for a dashing young soldier, the hallways are ringing with the sound of wedding bells. However, not all the guests are in the mood for love, and a string of deceptions soon surround not only the young couple, but also the steadfastly single Beatrice and Benedick. Director Simon Godwin (Twelfth Night, Antony and Cleopatra) returns following the award-winning success of his Romeo & Juliet film.

The Yeomen of the Guard

30/9/2022

Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria, Monash University, The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts and Monash University Performing Arts Centres invite you to experience
The Yeomen of the Guard
DATES: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6 - SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8
LOCATION: Alexander Theatre- Monash Uni, Clayton 48 Exhibition Walk, Clayton
WEBSITE AND TICKETS: https://www.monash.edu/perform.../event/yeomen-of-the-guard/ and https://gsov.org.au/the-yeomen-of-the-guard-2022/
With full orchestra, talented soloists and chorus, new sets and authentic costumes recently imported from the UK, this is a dramatic tale of romance and bravery: a sumptuous new production of this G&S Masterpiece from Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria, “Australia’s foremost exponent of light opera” (The Age). Set in the time of Henry VIII, the hero Colonel Fairfax is to be beheaded on a trumped-up charge. However, he is saved by the bravery of the Meryll family, aided by the strolling players, Elsie Maynard and Jack Point, perhaps Gilbert’s finest character. And, before the happy resolution, there are the complications of five romantic entanglements to enjoy.
Gilbert and Sullivan both thought this their best work and the closest they came to grand opera. Gilbert supplied Sullivan with what he longed for: a libretto of real and bitter-sweet human emotions with an intriguing and serious plot. Sullivan wrote ravishing music, resulting in, arguably, the most performed opera written in English.
All thanks to our friends at Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria, Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine covers the production on the media night ( Kieran McNamara and Francine Nugent) please stay tuned for more information

Thespis or The Gods Grown Old

Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria and Malvern Theatre Company invite you to experience
#Thespis or The Gods Grown Old
DATES: THURSDAY, November 17 - SUNDAY, November 20
LOCATIION: Malvern Theatre 29 Burke Rd, Malvern East VIC
WEBSITE and TICKETS: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/826958 and https://gsov.org.au/thespis-2022/
Libretto by W.S.GILBERT
Music by ARTHUR SULLIVAN, JACQUES OFFENBACH
New Performing Version by ANTHONY BAKER, TIM HENTY
Director: DIANA BURLEIGH
Musical Director: GEOFFREY URQUHART
The setting is Ancient Greece where the gods on Mount Olympus are tired and ageing. When a troupe of actors stumble onto them an agreement is reached that the gods and actors will swap places for a year. Of course, chaos and much fun ensues.
Celebrating the 151th anniversary of the first collaboration by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, Thespis is less a comic opera and more a joyous extravaganza. It was traditional for theatres to put on festive works over the Christmas season, and Gilbert and Sullivan were commissioned to provide one for the London’s Gaiety Theatre for Christmas 1871. Much of the music has been lost, but detailed research has allowed the work to be reconstructed.
Bar available.

Fiennes is brilliant portraying Robert Moses (1888 - 1981), a very powerful and charismatic urban planner, whose career spanned over 40 years. Early in his career, Moses claimed to want to give all New Yorkers easy access to the outdoors, but with time, his motives were revealed to be less pure. A heartfelt comedy by Mark Crawford about ‘being out’, skeletons in the closet and finding a place to call home. When Brett and Drew unexpectedly inherit a historic family home in a quiet little tourist town, the couple decides to make the move and start up a B&B. But when they face friction in their new community, they discover the simple life is more complicated than they thought…
With dozens of characters – all portrayed by two actors, Bed & Breakfast is a theatrical tour de force. As riotously funny as it is deeply moving, this is a heartfelt comedy about ‘being out’ in small town Australia, skeletons in the closet, and finding a place to call home.

When his campaign encounters resistance, this inexperienced new ruler must prove he is fit to guide a country into war.

Back to Back Theatre, Monash University Performing Arts Centres, Monash University, Zilla & Brook, MLIVE and Alexander Theatre invite you to experience:
The Shadow Whose Prey The Hunter Becomes
DATES: 19-20 May 0730pm
LOCATION: Alexander Theatre, The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts, 48 Exhibition Walk, Clayton
WEBSITE AND TICKETS: https://www.monash.edu/perfor.../event/back-to-back-theatre/#
The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes is a story about a public meeting, the type of meeting you would hope to happen in a certain kind of democracy. How do we come together to make decisions that are in the best interest of a civic society?
Don’t miss this remarkable production by world-renowned Australian company, Back To Back Theatre; winners of the 2022 International Ibsen Award and SXSW Audience Award.
Coming to Monash University Performing Arts Centres this May is leading Australian theatre company, Back to Back Theatre with The Shadow Whose Prey The Hunter Becomes. Recent recipients of the international Ibsen award, dubbed the ‘ Nobel Prize for Theatre’ and the SXSW Audience Award for their screen adaptation of Shadow, Back to Back Theatre is recognised as a company that has brought new artistic dimensions to the world of theatre.
Weaving a narrative through human rights, sexual politics, and the projected dominance of artificial intelligence, The Shadow Whose Prey the Hunter Becomes is a sly theatrical revelation inspired by mistakes, mis-readings, mis-leadings and misunderstanding, Shadow reminds us that none of us are self-sufficient and all of us are responsible. Back to Back Theatre creates new forms of contemporary performance imagined from the minds and experiences of a unique ensemble of actors with a disability, giving voice to social and political issues that speak to all people. Based in the regional centre of Geelong, the company is one of Australia’s most globally recognised and respected contemporary theatre companies.
In addition to its professional practice, Back to Back collaborates intensively with communities around the world, with a focus on artistic excellence and elevated social inclusion for people with disabilities. THE SHADOW WHOSE PREY THE HUNTER BECOMES has been co-commissioned by Carriageworks, Theater der Welt, Düsseldorf 2020, the Keir Foundation, the Thyne Reid Foundation and The Anthony Costa Foundation, supported by Creative Partnerships Australia through Plus 1, with development support from the Geelong Arts Centre, Arts Centre Melbourne, Melbourne International Arts Festival, the Une Parkinson Foundation, The Public Theater (New York City) and ArtsEmerson (Boston).
THE SHADOW WHOSE PREY THE HUNTER BECOMES was developed, in part, at the 2019 Sundance Theatre Lab at MASS MoCA.
