Dance Buena Vista DATE: Saturday 26 March 2022 0730pm VENUE: The Palms At Crown Casino, Melbourne, Southbank , VIC WEBSITE: https://www.crownmelbourne.com.au/.../dance-buena-vista... TICKETS: https://www.ticketmaster.com.au/.../event/25005C2B6F21390B From the phenomenon of the Buena Vista Social Club comes Eric Turro Martinez, the king of Cuban dance. A living legend of the Cuban international dance scene, Eric has brought Cuba’s traditional dances to world-renowned stage shows; The Bar at Buena Vista, Havana Rumba and Hemmingway’s Havana, touring with the biggest icons of Cuban music worldwide since 2004. It was on the poor streets of the old Havana that the story of one of the greatest dancers of our era can be found. This is the story of Eric’s journey from a busking dancer on the streets of Havana to the prestigious Hotel National with the Buena Vista Social Club in Cuba. A story of humble beginnings to a meteoric rise to international star and a worldwide dance reference recognised by UNESCO. DANCE BUENA VISTA is Cuban history expressed through a stage show and narrated by Eric Turro Martinez Buena Vista’s very own. Kavita Chabra and her team extended an extremely warm welcomed me into a warm and friendly atmosphere. This was greatly enhanced by the substantial canapes, drinks and listening to the wonderful strains of Emma Martin’s violin playing. The program commenced with a meditation led by Adela Zemanova from Free Meditation - Living Sensually. Adela is also a fashion designer and Feminine energy embodiment practitioner. You can follow her @adela.zemanova for free healing meditation and info about upcoming events. The meditation segued into a lively panel discussion on how can we break the bias? - the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD commemorates the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women. It also brings attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. The panel was chaired by Garry Lee, Australia Day Council New Australian of the Year 2016. Panel members were: Molina Swarup Asthana – President Elect of the Law Institute of Victoria and diversity advocate. Mira D Silva – Co Founder of Delivery Centric – An Australian based company – a cyber security firm https://www.deliverycentric.com/ Celina Tran – Principal adviser - Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) – and one of the 40 under 40 most influential Asian Australians. Since the demonstrations and lobbying of the women’s Liberation Movement of the 1970s the gender pay gap still exists and needs to be closed. How can we break this bias? Celia Tran from the VMC stated that there was still a monocultural workplace in Government. How do we break this bias? She felt there is still a journey ahead and we need to strip these barriers. But what are we doing about it? How much of yourself to you bring to work? And there is no way you can leave your personal life at home - so true. Mira said that we needed to support each other. We see it in Government by the appalling way Julia Gillard, our first female Prime Minister, was treated by her counterparts, and the hesitancy of women on both sides of the House to attempt to step up to this role. It is endemic across workplaces, institutions, and communities. How can we stem the tide of this bias for good? Reference was made to the 1980s when legislation was enacted against sexual harassment in the workplace and women had commenced climbing the corporate ladder. The consensus then was how women could fix themselves to fit in with patriarchal attitudes. The 1990s saw the rise of women onto Boards, but this is not enough. The bias we need to break is not only the gender pay gap, but also multicultural diversity. Australia as a “white bread” country no longer exists and multiculturalism is now the norm. But still more needs to be done. Unfortunately, racism and patronising attitudes towards immigrants and people of colour still exist in Australia; and there must be more emphasis on diversity and inclusivity towards gender inequities, people of colour, and disability. Women need to engage with men as allies and not to become like them. According to Molina, more seats need to be created at the table for women and those being marginalised. We all can contribute in our small ways to break this bias in our everyday lives to ensure an even playing field. Networking is the way to go by surrounding yourself with those that support and ground you. Rise up out of your comfort zone and meet your unconscious bias head on. But don’t change who you are – the system needs to change. Together we can do it. You don’t need to do this alone. Festivities continued with a fashion parade and prizes were awarded for beautiful outfits, in the themed colours of pink, purple, lavender. There was also music and Brazilian dancing by Natalia from Colombia. Congratulations must go to the Emcee of the day Minnie Dhillön, a young lawyer who performed her role with grace, dignity and confidence. My thanks go Kavita Chabra and Urban Vegas for their hospitality. Raven Mad DATES: 1-3 April at 0400pm and 0630pm VENUE: Prahran Square, corner of Izzett and Chatham Streets, Prahran WEBSITE: https://www.nica.com.au/raven-mad TICKETS: www.comedyfestival.com.au/2022/shows/raven-mad/ Directed by Mike Finch and designed by Emily Barrie. Proudly supported by The City of Stonnington Join us in Prahran Square from this April Fools’ Day weekend for an absurd circus street-battle between the local bureaucratic ravens and an eccentric family of hard-rubbish collectors… all unpacked from a blue box-trailer! SHOW DESCRIPTION A suburban family of eccentrics have travelled on foot from the east (the Dandenongs) to settle in the west, the long-promised land of Sunshine. Like bowerbirds, Nan, Jan, Mindy and Scot have been collecting blue hard rubbish from the nature strips along the way – blue clothing, blue baggage, blue utensils, a barbeque, not one but two blue shopping trolleys, all piled in a full-sized blue box-trailer! However, the local bureaucratic ravens consider this gaudy traveling junk-show as a territorial challenge and swoop down to patrol the borders and if necessary send this family back to where they came from – the east ... Dandenong. Mayhem ensues, and the show descends into an absurd vaudevillian circus street-battle for freedom! Expect acrobatics, foot-juggling, skipping, disco, hula-hoops, meteor-bowls, slapstick, mouth-sticking, hand-balancing, slipper-kicking, ball-manipulation, bottle-balancing, contortion, improvisation, ladder-walking, bag-pipe-impersonation, box-stepping and barbecuing. Made as a comic circus response to our collective current circumstances, social distancing, borders opening (and closing and opening again!) The world needs a show that can be performed literally anywhere, that meets an all-ages audiences where they are – socially distanced and outdoors! After two years of lockdowns, this show celebrates getting together again for live entertainment and comedy! It reignites the shared experience of performance through inclusive audience interaction, circus spectacle, inventive production, costume design, upcycling and recycling found objects. Originally conceived by Melenie Stevenson (National Institute of Circus Arts – NICA), Emily Barrie (Moomba, Rawcus, Ilbijerri Theatre Company) and co-devised by Director Mike Finch (Artistic Director Circus Oz 1997-2015) this show celebrates some incredibly skilled alumni of NICA, Emily’s eccentric and eye-catching found-object design, Mike’s sense of comic circus ensemble, and stars some of Australia’s best new and internationally seasoned circus talent: ‘TaraBoom’ Silcock, Hannah Richards, Joshua Phillips, Jarred Dewey, Olivia Porter and Tully Fedorowjtsch. With an extraordinarily broad range of ridiculous and jaw-dropping circus and performance skills between them, this is an all-ages comic street-circus battle of a hundred skills! Raven Mad is aimed squarely at the broadest possible all-ages audience, this is a shared celebratory, spectacular and comic event in an unexpected outdoor setting. We consider ourselves part of a global movement to democratise theatre and make live performance culture more accessible to all-backgrounds, all-ages audiences who may feel excluded by 'high'-culture, high ticket prices, exclusive indoor ‘arts’ venues or culturally inaccessible traditions. This is spectacular, funny, skilled circus-theatre for everyone! When John is given only a few months left to live, he attempts to find a new, perfect family for Michael, determined to shield him from the terrible reality of the situation. Although initially certain of what he is looking for in the perfect family, John gradually abandons his early convictions, over- whelmed by doubts on the decision. How can he judge a family from a brief encounter? And does he know his own child well enough to make this choice for him? As John struggles to find the right answer to his impossible task, he comes to accept the help of a young social worker, opening himself to solutions he would never have considered. And he finally comes to accept his anger at the injustice of his destiny, the need to share the truth with his son, and to follow the child's instincts on the biggest decision of their lives. please follow Amit Singh's review published: http://bohemianrhapsodyclub.weebly.com/la-premiere.html Do you want your business to gain global publicity?
