It’s that time of year when we emerge from our wintery cocoons and embrace all that Spring has to offer, including an annual trip to Italy with the ST. ALi Italian Film Festival! This edition features a stunning selection of contemporary Italian cinema, a nod to Pier Paolo Pasolini on the centenary of his birth, and a spotlight on Naples, featuring Mario Martone’s Nostalgia selected at the Cannes Film Festival (In Competition).
We are also excited to be screening two very fresh films direct from their world premieres: Francesca Archibugi’s highly anticipated ensemble drama The Hummingbird (Il colibrì), direct from Toronto International Film Festival (Gala); and Gianni Amelio‘s Lord of The Ants (Il signore delle formiche), straight from Venice Film Festival (In Competition). Join us at the cinema for a ST. ALi Coffee, vino or aperitivo, as we share the enjoyment of seeing films on the big screen.
Enjoy, indulge and live la dolce vita!
All thanks to our friends at the festival management and PR team, Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine will be covering the media preview for the film NOSTALGIA (journalist Alexander O. Montgomery) https://www.italianfilmfestival.com.au/films/nostalgia
After 40 years of absence, Felice returns to his hometown: Naples. He rediscovers the places, the codes of the city and a past that eats away at him.

CIRCONOCLASM

27/8/2022

National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) and Zilla & Brook invite you to
CIRCONOCLASM
DATES: 14-17 September (Preview 13 Sept) at 0200pm Matinee and 0730pm Evenings
LOCATION: #NICA National Circus Centre, 39 – 59 Green Street, Prahran
WEBSITE: https://nica.com.au/performs // https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/940791
NICA Performs presents CIRCONOCLASM taking place Wednesday 14 – Saturday 17 September at NICA National Circus Centre (NNCC Building). Directed by David Woods, CIRCONOCLASM has been devised with NICA 2nd year students. Iconoclasm (the theft or wilful damage of artworks) is an age-old practice that continues to serve as a powerful modus operadni for those wanting to capture the world’s attention in a moment of meaningful cultural defiance.
To this very day, iconoclasm remains a provocative act that brings issues of the day into sharp focus – so what does that mean for the future of modern circus? Enter CIRCONOCLASM: An art-heist inspired by the infamous NGV Picasso theft by the “Australian Cultural Terrorists” and every heist movie ever... Directed by David Woods (Ridiculusmus Theatre Company, London) and devised by the students, the curtain opens as Seurat’s triptych of pointillist paintings on circus are gathered for the first time in a big splash for the National Australia Gallery. Though armed with a veritable fortress of high-tech security, the paintings are stolen in a daring heist during the swanky opening party. We encourage you to expect the unexpected with hoop diving, tightwire and teeterboards entangled in the unfolding drama of the ultimate circus art-heist.
“My expectation is that the students will gleefully play within the constructs I have imagined with a degree of democracy and ownership,” says Director David Woods. “Though ultimately, I maintain final artistic decisions, the autonomy rests with each artist, allowing myself and the senior creative team to provide an overarching aesthetic and performance grammar for this next generation of cirque talent.” NICA’s Head of Circus, James Brown (2016 – Present), encourages audiences to shake off the dust by returning to live performance.
“We have all had a challenging few years, and what better than to escape to the theatre to witness Australia’s up and coming circus talent. These students have the pleasure of working with International Director, David Woods, and his unique character and comedy approach to Circus is not to be missed.” CIRCONOCLASM promises to be immersive, hilarious, and admirable.
The National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA) is Australia’s Centre of Excellence for training in contemporary circus arts. It is one of eight national arts training institutes and offers Australia’s only Bachelor of Circus Arts. Graduates of NICA have gone on to pursue exciting careers both locally and internationally and have contributed to the development of Melbourne’s vibrant circus arts industry.
All thanks to our friends at #NICA , Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine is covering the opening night (media: Kieran McNamara of Kieran Mcnamara Photography) please stay tuned for more information.

"So it’s been so nice to be out of lockdown finally with everything reopening and being allowed to shoot again. I recently had the opportunity to do an impromptu shoot with the wonderful Peter at Tall Dark & Art Studios. We had a few rough concepts in mind to play with, with the idea of fabric. As I was wrapping the fabric around me on set, I said “Fabric is Primordial Fashion, it can become anything” as a joke. That comment led to the theme and vibe of this set. This just proves to me that Creativity is The King. Sometimes we can have everything planned out to a tee, other times we can just allow it to flow and come up with something even better than either or us had envisioned.
We hope you enjoy the images..."

FATA ORGANA
"n. a flash of real emotion glimpsed in someone sitting across the room, idly locked in the middle of some group conversation, their eyes glinting with vulnerability or quiet anticipation or cosmic boredom—as if you could see backstage through a gap in the curtains, watching stagehands holding their ropes at the ready, actors in costume mouthing their lines, fragments of bizarre sets waiting for some other production."... with the focus on fiercely feminine.

Universal Pictures invite you to watch a new documentary called MOONAGE DAYDREAM
in cinemas August 18
From Oscar-nominated filmmaker Brett Morgen, director of Cobain: Montage of Heck, and featuring never-before-seen concert footage, MOONAGE DAYDREAM is an immersive cinematic experience; an audio-visual space odyssey that not only illuminates the enigmatic legacy of David Bowie but also serves as a guide to living a fulfilling and meaningful life in the 21st Century. MOONAGE DAYDREAM is not a documentary. It is a genre-defying cinematic experience based on one of the most iconic and global rock stars of all time, destined to be one of the defining cultural moments of the year
The film has the full support of Bowie’s estate and features many of his greatest tracks, as well as previously unseen concert footage.
