Australian Toy Hobby & Licensing Fair 2021

Australian Toy Hobby & Licensing Fair
2021 had a unique face to face opportunity on Tuesday 2nd March and virtual 1-5 March and was organised by Australian Toy Association
. Our media was invited to cover the exhibition this year. https://austoy.com.au/toy-fair/the-fair
This is the biggest and most important industry event in Australia, attracting the largest names in toys and thousands of attendees from around the world. At this annual event, media, retailers and buyers are given their first look at the new toy, hobby and licensing products from suppliers. The Internationally acclaimed event showcased new and exciting Toys each year.
Please read Elice Thomas
' review accompanied by her images:
THE AUSTRALIAN TOY HOBBY AND LICENSING FAIR 2021
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m more a kid at heart than a grown-up, so given the chance to attend the Australian Toy Association (ATA) Awards, I had to accept. Usually this event is held at the Melbourne Convention Centre, but due to COVID restrictions, 2021 has seen the awards moved to a small office space. This didn’t bother the kids invited to playtest the toys, as they quickly gravitated towards their favourite toys.
Last year, the ATA introduced a Judges’ Choice Aware, which is a predictive category based on how well retailers expect the toy to do on shelves that year. Even better, this year another category has been introduced – the Kids’ Choice Award, to that kids can have their own say. “Bluey and LEGO are firm favourites,” says Alice Sanderson, Executive Manager of the Association. But new toys like Funrise Australia’s ‘Kid in a Bubble’ are also seeing their share of fame, with ‘Kid in a Bubble’ winning the Kids’ Choice Toy of the Year because of the advent of “outdoor play”. Barbie continues to win multiple categories as well, due to its “innovative design”.
I’m happy to report that many Australian-designed and -manufactured products have also won multiple categories, such as Happy Planet Toys, Moose, and Gemex. Each of these companies has toys that are predicted to do very well in the upcoming year, many of them new and innovative. One such example is Happy Planet Toys’ bathtime playsets, which are particularly inventive for their use of recycled plastics to create aquatic-themed toys for younger children. Kids like the cute, chunky design and it’s a great way to help the planet.
SO what do judges look for when judging toys? Says Alice, “Judges are buyers and retailers, so it’s based on their experience [selling toys]”. Replayability, as well as how well the toy is expected to sell based on similar designs, are top concerns. Out of hundreds of products, 18 are chosen for each category, such as hobby toys, collectibles, and early learning.
I very much enjoyed this experience, seeing all of these toys on show and finding my own favourites amongst them - I’m partial to LEGO myself, which had won collectible and construction Toy of the Year for the upcoming year. I hope to attend next year’s awards, when, fingers crossed, it can be moved back to a bigger space and I can experience them in their full glory.

ATTENTION TO ALL CREATIVE MINDS

18/3/2021

ATTENTION TO ALL CREATIVE MINDS:
photographers, designers, writers, models, artists, stylists, MUAHs, artistic directors and others alike:
there is the challenge described:
LA CUNA
n. a twinge of sadness that there’s no frontier left, that as the last explorer trudged with his armies toward a blank spot on the map, he didn’t suddenly remember his daughter’s upcoming piano recital and turn for home, leaving a new continent unexplored so we could set its mists and mountains aside as a strategic reserve of mystery, if only to answer more of our children’s questions with “Nobody knows! Out there, anything is possible.”
The word comes from The Dictionary Of Obscure Sorrows.
Coined in 2012 by John Koenig in The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, a project, to create a compendium of invented words for every emotion we might all experience but don’t yet have a word for. They are beautifully obscure words describing complex emotions you may know. As humans, we experience a vast and intricate emotional array of feelings.
"Sheldon: You know it just occurred to me, if there are an infinite number of parallel universes, in one of them there's probably a Sheldon who doesn't believe parallel universes exist..." from TBBT
ANNOUNCING COMPETITION
on the best concept / style photograph or set of photographs that will fit into the category "LA CUNA" with the focus on "dreams, moments and lands, designed to discover".
We publish the best photos in the coming winter issue of MARQUIS FASHION MAGAZINE
The due date for submission is 15 April 2021 1200pm
The works of art should be sent in the form of a direct dropbox link or direct wetransfer link with the full list of credits and your story of inspiration to accompany it
to natasha.marchev@gmail.com or in PM.
Your photos should be a highly acclaimed art in fashion - each image should be like a part of a collective story for the magazine pages therefore making it more readable for everyone who opens it.
good luck!

Punk is exploding. The country is deeply divided over immigration. The National Front, a far right and fascist political party, is gaining strength as politicians like Enoch Powell push a xenophobic agenda. Outraged by a racist speech from Eric Clapton, music photographer Red Saunders writes a letter to the music press, calling for rock to be a force against racism. NME, Melody Maker, and Sounds all publish the letter. Flooded with responses, Red discovers many share his views. Teaming up with like-minded creatives Roger Huddle, Kate Webb, Syd Shelton and Australian graphic designer Ruth Gregory, the team bands together to create Rock Against Racism (RAR) and a fanzine, Temporary Hoarding. Speaking directly to the youth, Temporary Hoarding reports stories and issues that the mainstream British media ignores, like immigration, the Catholic side of the Northern Ireland conflict, and the police’s controversial “suspected persons” (sus) powers. They give a voice to the voiceless. The National Front begins to strike back, committing acts of violence against RAR supporters and petrol-bombing their HQ. Despite this, RAR spreads virally across the UK and into Europe, becoming a grassroots youth movement. The Clash, Steel Pulse, Tom Robinson and other top bands of the day jump on board. White Riot is a moment in time when music changed the world. When a generation challenged the status quo. It’s Woodstock meets the March on Washington, punk-style.

TRIBUTE TO Rocky Gathercole

11/3/2021

TRIBUTE FROM MARQUIS FASHION MAGAZINE
, Bohemian Rhapsody Weekly Magazine
, our media crew who worked with Rocky Gathercole lately and all the fashion world.
The sad news about passing away of Very Gathercole incredibly unique fashion brand creator, Rocky Gathercole
, at the age of 55 sent all his fans, social media followers, clients, friends and family into a hysterical state of shock. In his spectacular artistic career, the Filipino-born fashion designer established a reputation as the extraordinary avant-garde garments creator. My personal feeling was and still is inconsolable. Thousands of people paid tribute at his live video funeral services.
I was invited by Alexander O. Montgomery, Choy Symes
and @Anthony Wayne to Rocky's fashion show in 2018 in Melbourne and had a chance to speak with him BTS after the show. Humble, witty, modest and very grounded and happy, Rocky had time for everyone who approached him that evening to pay their respect to the show he prepared. He was restless and welcomed everyone with his warmest smile. Later in 2021 we were lucky enough to reconnect with Rocky, run a formal interview with him ( @Anthony Wayne) and feature the images of his latest creations on our magazine four covers as well as inside the magazine. He was very easy to communicate with, very open and down to Earth, the features I highly respect in humans that mainly define the greatest talent. Ego kills talent. Being humble only highlights the beauty of your creative soul. When you know who you are there is no pretention of who you are not.
Rocky was "an inspiration, coming from humble beginnings being homeless in the Philippines at a young age, to the glitz and glam of Hollywood." His love for design and the desire to create changed his life completely. The designer had a strong impact on the Dubai and Saudi Arabia fans for more than 20 years as well as his mother land, Philippines where he originally inherited his unorthodox style. Rocky dressed up Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, Nicky Minaj, and Katy Perry to name a few celebrities. The artist's fearless and provocative designs and astonishing ideas are dramatic and "have the ability to communicate deep down our senses " His inspiration is known to be born from "seen and unseen". His designs were not only sewn, they were "constructed".
This moment we are paying our respects to legendary Rocky's talent in his non physical presence for all of us as we all know that Soul is eternal. Though heartbroken of the genius quick passing away, we were honored to work with Rocky at his almost last hours of life together with @Kirstie Jones , one of our magazine graphic designers, RIP, the finest soul!

AFFFF21: LOVE AFFAIR(S)

10/3/2021

Alliance Française French Film Festival
2021 invites you to watch LOVE AFFAIR(S) https://www.affrenchfilmfestival.org/.../love-affairs/sydney
Direct from the Cannes Film Festival, Love Affair(s) embodies many classic tropes of French cinema, by combining witty dialogue with emotionally resonate truths thatwill have you laughing, crying, yearning for romance and swearing off love forever. As its name would suggest, Love Affair(s) follows a series of interlocking tales of relationships and affairs, which have been described as ‘a more serious Love Actually’. At the centre of it all is Daphné (Camélia Jordana), a pregnant woman whose boyfriend has left her alone in the French countryside with his cousin Maxime (Niels Schneider, Sibyl, AF FFF20), who is nursing a broken heart. As Daphné and Maxime share stories of love gained and love lost, they become increasingly intimate with each other in the seclusion of the country house.
The tales range from the sensual to the frivolous, the profound to the ridiculous, and the comedic to the thoughtful. Throughout all the twists, emotional detours and unexpected connections, Love Affair(s) is an entertaining and surprising exploration of the complexities of modern love that will satisfy romantics, cynics and anybody in between who has ever experienced the messiness of love and desire.

AFFFF21: Final Set

10/3/2021

Alliance Française French Film Festival
2021 invites you to watch FINAL SET https://www.affrenchfilmfestival.org/film/final-set/
A tense and nail-biting drama about the high-pressure world of professional tennis playing, Final Set is a must-see for fans of sport films, but also for anybody who loves stories about people facing immense odds. From an early age Thomas (Alex Lutz, Guy, AF FFF19) was on the path to becoming a world champion, but he never got the break he and his mother Judith (acclaimed star of French and English cinema Kristin Scott Thomas) felt he deserved. Now as he approaches the end of his 30s, hampered by injury and past his peak fitness levels, Thomas decides to take one last shot at winning the French Open. Will he finally achieve the glory he’s always wanted?
Final Set delivers a captivating insight into the challenges faced by an aging sport player who has passed his prime and yet still yearns for a place in the spotlight. Thomas has to win on the tennis court, but he also has to win the battle against internal and external pressures including aging, self-doubt, pressure from loved ones to quit and the confronting reality that youth is the most prized currency and commodity.
