The SUBSTATION opens its doors and dance floors this March with four scorching works as part of Dance Massive, Australia’s largest celebration of contemporary dance. Three-time APRA Art Music Award winning percussionist Claire Edwardes and Helpmann Award winning dancer Richard Cilli unite their distinct virtuosic talents in an unusual presentation of how movement sounds and how sound moves in RECITAL.
Edwardes and Cilli collaborate with acclaimed director and choreographer Gideon Obarzanek and Australia’s leading electro-pop composer Paul Mac to create an intriguing display. Set in the orthodox world of a music and dance recital, the ambiguous relationship between the two performers intensifies. The outcomes are impressive, disturbing and wildly ecstatic. The season features a spectacular double bill - Lilian Steiner's Memoir for Rivers and The Dictator and Rachel Arianne Ogle’s i have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.
In Memoir for Rivers and The Dictator award-winning choreographer and performer Lilian Steiner with Reuben Lewis on trumpet, explore the impact of human experience and the personal histories that store themselves within the body. Through masterful movement and evocative sonic landscapes, the audience is lead through memories of war and destruction, personal power, passion and human empathy. Originally commissioned as part of the Keir Choreographic Award 2018 and presented at Les Plateaux and Constellations Festival (both in France), this is the world premiere of the full-length iteration of the work.
Rachel Arianne Ogle’s i have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night is an immersive installation of improvised light and sound. A single human body becomes an abstracted focal point — a disembodied drishti — within an unfolding science fiction odyssey. The work explores states of transition and the synergy between light, sound and the body, offering audiences a meditation on time, perspective and the moment of death. Developed through in depth collaboration and a residency at the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Centre (EMPAC) in New York, Rachel Arianne Ogle, Luke Smiles and Benjamin Cisterne have created a transcendental experiment in design.
The SUBSTATION takes dance to the masses, presenting the playful interactive multi-media installation, Cinematic Experiments at Altona Gate Shopping Centre from 14 to 17 March. Cinema interacts with contemporary dance as media artists Margie Medlin, Rhian Hinkley, Olaf Meyer and James Wilkinson devise a series of experiments that combine motion graphics with digital dance choreography by Vicki Van Hout and Patrick Lucky Lartey. This work invites the audience to bring a sense of curiosity and explore their own movement in relation to this dynamic and frequently changing installation.

Powerful and intense, Steiner’s avant-garde storytelling is a collage of masterful movement, dramatic imagery and evocative sonic landscapes that reveal the complex impressions left by moments of war and destruction, personal power, passion and empathy.
Originally commissioned as part of the Keir Choreographic Award 2018, this is the world premiere of the full-length iteration of the work. * Memoir for Rivers and The Dictator is part of a double bill with i have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.
