The Iranian film industry is bursting with creativity and new energy in this new political era and once again we’ve hand-picked the very best for you. We can announce that we will be opening with one of the year’s hottest dramas, Life and a Day, the debut feature from 26-year-old Saeed Roostaie. About a struggling family from South Tehran as they prepare to send their beloved daughter and sister, the glue in the family, to Afghanistan for an arranged marriage, the film won the Audience award at Fajr and nine further awards, including best director, best script, best actress Parinaz Izadyar, and best supporting actor Navid Mohammadzadeh. We are thrilled to be screening Reza Mirkarimi’s award winning Daughter, set in Abadan and Tehran. It’s clear right from the opening scene that we are in the hands of a master. Of course we are bringing IFFA fest favourites, including Asghar Farhadi’s The Salesman, from Cannes, starring the luminescent Taraneh Alidoosti and Shahab Hosseini. Reza Dormeshian also returns with Lantouri (fresh from Berlin), re-uniting him with Baran Kosari and Navid Mohammadzadeh in a tale of love that turns to a hatred expressed in the most vicious way. Leila Hatami will be back in a popular new film, we have a beautiful new restoration of a classic of Iranian cinema, and a special event yet to be unveiled. All Australian premieres (with the exception of A Dragon Arrives! and The Salesman, which premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival this year).
