The 2023 Saxo Scandinavian Film Festival, now in its ninth year, showcases the best contemporary cinema from these countries, selected from international film festivals and markets such as Göteborg, Cannes and Berlin. Geographically, #Scandinavia refers to the Northern European sub-region of #Denmark, #Norway and #Sweden, but nearly a decade ago at the Cannes Film Festival the idea was born to incorporate more countries from the #Nordic region into a festival for the Australian audience to experience.
Taking the lead from #Scandinavian Films, the umbrella organisation representing all five Nordic Film Institutes, we felt this was a perfect way to present a curated selection from the region. This year's lineup includes a specially curated selection including recent award winners, exquisite dramas, thrillers for Scandi noir lovers and a collection of cult classics. We hope you can beat the winter chill and enjoy your festival experience!
A specially curated programme will be screening at Palace Cinemas, Luna Palace Cinemas and Palace Nova Cinemas from July to August, encompassing films from Denmark,# Finland, #Iceland, Norway and Sweden. Opening the Festival is the Australian #Premiere of Let The River Flow, based on true events and starring magnetic newcomer Ella Marie Hætta Isaksen. Festival Centrepiece GODLAND is award-winning Icelandic writer/director Hlynur Pálmason’s follow-up to his breakout hit A White, White Day, and Special Presentation Aki Kaurismäki’s tragicomedy FALLEN LEAVES comes direct from the Cannes Film Festival 2023.
Exploring culture, history and life in the Nordic region, a host of Australian premieres bring high calibre and award-winning Scandinavian films to Australian cinema screens this July.
